What a surprise a geeky site like the escapist has Mass Effect 2 as the favourite game xD
I kid but still, wouldn't surprise me if Mass Effect 2 won

Artistic Achievement

* Assassin?s Creed Brotherhood
* Call of Duty: Black Ops
* God of War III
* Heavy Rain
* LIMBO
* Mass Effect 2
COD and artistic in the same sentence, I lol'd
Artistic may not be the word, but I thought that the Black Ops campaign was really well-done and I'm not talking about set pieces or the gameplay, but rather the actual narrative itself. It was engaging, well put together and had a good and satisfying ending. Also, some of the sequences were really well done on top of that such as the Nova Gas attack or the meeting with Kennedy.

Interestingly, some of the missions were from templates of real missions that members of the American army participated in. Maybe if you look at the art above a visual perspective then yes Black Ops does deserve to be on the list but if Limbo doesn't win there will be blood

Gonna go with Reach. Excellent game befitting an excellent series. Not as much "mystery and awe" as in the other Halo games, but the campaign was still damn good and the multiplayer is extremely fun.

I still like Halo 3 more, but that's irrelevant right now.

Runner up is Mass Effect 2, but I've gone off that series for the moment. Really not in the mood.

RDR ftw, though sadly ME2 will likely win because its BW...
People who praise the values of a given game developer despite their flaws are no less coherent than people who condemn said developer despite their merits.

You still haven't grasped the concept of "opinions" I see.
Oh please Bioware could release a gears of war clone and it would be "teh best deepest rpg ever" Just because its BW.
Just like CiD can create a generic fps, and be considered best fps ever.
Not true at all.

Mass Effect 2 is constantly debated in relation to whether or not it is even an RPG at all. Most game magazines refer to it as "action/adventure" and a lot of fans of the series criticise it for dumbing down the RPG elements seen in the first game.

If you head on over to the Bioware forums you will also see that 2/3 threads are about how much worse Mass Effect 2 is compared to Mass Effect 1.

This is hardly the attitude of a bunch of ignorant fanboys who adore everything Bioware does.
yeah i will agree to this, its hardly an rpg in the actual respect of it, and i have yet to see anyone boast it as "THE BEST RPG EVAR", and i have multiple friends who think me2 is garbage compared to the 1st one (i personally like the game for what its worth)

I wonder how poor this years video game baftas will be.

It's close for me between Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption, I enjoyed them both and didn't put them down until I completed them, but I think it'll have to be Red Dead.

Mass Effect 2 didn't really dive in to the after effects of your moral choices; I chose not to save the council and it was filled with a human council, how did they accomodate this decision? By not allowing me to see the council at all, nice. Then it sort of jkust goes back to Mass Effect 1, everyone not believing you and all that, and it's just building up for the 3rd one anyway right?

I'd go for this:

Action * Assassin?s Creed Brotherhood

Artistic Achievement * Heavy Rain

Yeah I'd say this one is pretty good in this area, compared to the others I've played. I've heard Limbo is all about the art and nothing else, but I haven't played it.

Best Game * Mass Effect 2

Best game award that doesn't include all the ones from the bafta game award? Hmm...

Gameplay * Mass Effect 2

Yeah sure why not, I liked the classes and skills a bit.

Multiplayer
* Call of Duty: Black Ops
* Halo: Reach
* Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Dayum.. I've played these and enjoyed them all. I think black ops and reach are pretty close, but I think sc2 needs the credit. It's pretty big and the tournaments and competitions are crazy, the amount of streams people do, and all the different multiplayer custom games you can play (although mostly tower defence ones..), all adds up.

Story * Mass Effect 2

Well, can't say I really got into the others that I played. Mass Effect 2 wins by process of elimination.

Strategy * Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty

Of course.

Technical Innovation * Heavy Rain

I don't see any technical innovation about the other games I've played in this catagory.

GAME Award of 2010 * Red Dead Redemption

To be fair to Black Ops it does LOOK good. Do set pieces count as Games Art & Animation?

The BAFTA game awards are unfortunately like the Brits (the music awards announced this week) - they reward mainstream success, not necessarily the best or most innovative games. Let's go through those 8 from my perspective...

Call of Duty: Black Ops - not played it, but from what I've read it doesn't do much that is new
FIFA 11 - played it, felt it was poorer than FIFA10 or the World Cup edition
Halo Reach - played the beta, some interesting additions
Heavy Rain - played it (briefly), feel it is a genuine step forward for gaming, and should pick up awards left, right and centre
Mass Effect 2 - not played it, but can appreciate the depth
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit - not played it, but am a big Burnout fan so will be trying it
Red Dead Redemption - not played it, but feel it is a big success, from TV advertising to high review scores
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - playing it right now, amazed at how many fresh ideas there are just in the first few galaxies, can't wait to experience more

So, if I was voting I'd vote for Heavy Rain.

I basically agree with the poll. ME2 and Red Dead both deserve it, while I'd be happy - albeit surprised - to see the award go to Heavy Rain, for so presenting such a dramatically different experience.

It should be either ME2 or RDR but it will obviously go to Black Ops seeing as the people who chose the winners know nothing about the games themselves and will just choose the most popular.

Id go for RDR any day because it didnt try anywhere near as hard as Mass Effect 2 to be dumbed down, mainstream friendly at the expense of complexity, story and general artistry.

Plus Bioware cant even compete on a "cinematic" level to Rockstar. I like some of the ME characters (mostly from ME1, where they were more than just "recruit me and run my errand" objectives) but all the characters are clunky robots by comparison.

Every single movement, no matter how subtle is perfect in RDR in comparison to ME2s jaunty series of repetative animations lit off by signal flares.

"I have initiated "Nervous Neck Scratch #2". Now proceeding to "Generic Conversation Hand Movements #5". Finishing up with "Romantic Hand Hold #1".

And funilly enough its bullshit like "cinematics" and "being a perfect balance of RPG and Shooter" that this dumbed down TPS wins its bogus awards for.

Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 deserve it. It's likely that they will go for Heavy Rain, but I can't wait to see who's the winner. If it's Black Ops, I'll flip. As good as the game was, I don't think it's a BAFTA contender.

That's cool, though. I never knew Dara was a gamer. I guess you learn something new every day.

No, I didn't. What was his response?

I dearly miss the "None of the above" option.

In my opinion, all the nominees are crap.

Isn't it on the same engine that COD4 is on? I don't know, I guess it does but I assume physics should get better considerations
