Define: Fail.

Is it that it's a good/bad film or that it does well in the box office? I didn't think Tomb Raider was a great film personally but it did exceedingly well for a video game movie.

If they get a proper director, stay close to the original plot and doesnt blow all the money on big-name actors/actresses, then maybe there can be some good game-movies

A lot of the ones I've seen have been good... some have sucked though... like House of the Dead, Hitman, and a few others...

I have yet to see a good one. There is a World of Warcraft movie coming out that might be good if Sam Raimi doesn't just totally blow it. I think a Half-Life movie would be good as well.

The problem with game movies is they condense the plot to much and tap on hollywood love interests and plot twists. Having said that I don't think max payne was too bad, but that was less a movie based on a game and more like a movie that happened to have the same name. Also a while ago people thought that you wouldn't be able to make a good movie from a comic book but just look at watchmen or dark knight.

I liked Resident Evil: Extinction. Not so much a resident evil movie but a great zombie action movie.

To me, the problem is film makers seem to think that the fact that a movie is based on a game is enough. They don't have to make a good story or get talented actors. They just have to base it on a game and it will be a hit. Once they start taking it a bit more seriously, I think there could be some great ones.

god, i hope that they fail. I've never seen a game movie that was worth it's while, and when they're terrible, it gives outsiders a bad impression of games.

Well in my opinion, I'd say the Mortal Kombat movies were cheesey BUT they did an excellent job anyway. Most Video game movies fail because, the directors, and actors probably never played the games, and got to see the character delevopment in the game, so they don't know what to do, but act.

Most of them are shit. But the Final Fantasy and Max Payne movies are apparently quite good.
Final Fantasy is Decent, since it ripped a lot of ALIENS off and did so effectivly.

I'm not sure where you heard Max Payne is good. I love the games and the movie put me to sleep. Later, when I saw it while awake, it was still pretty bad.

Most of them suck.

Advent Children looked pretty and it was fun to watch--but they took such a step back with the characters that it was just annoying.

Tomb Raider was just ridiculous.

Never bothered to see Resident Evil, though I heard Extinction was good.

Silent Hill was just a retelling of the first game via genderswitch and added in those lame goons. So parts of it were really cool--but then other parts of it were just...over done.

So, overall, no.

Though, I will admit, I loved the hell out of Mortal Kombat when it came out. The first one came out when I was 9 and my dad took me to see it. I'd never played MK but the movie was really cool. I loved Scorpion. I still have a soft spot for it.

The first Mortal Kombat movie was pretty good and I personally liked the Silent Hill movie very much.

Looking at that poster for the Prince of Persia movie, i'm actually kind of excited that they managed to get an actor who resembles the Prince (although it's actually his getup from Warrior Within, now that I look at it). They seem to be doing everything pretty well, maybe that will be a decent game-to-movie translation.
One problem. It's Prince of Persia.

Jake Gyllenhaal does not look Persian to me. Neither does Gemma Arterton. Or most of the other cast members.

It's not really detrimental or anything, but it does take away a little of the immersion to cast blatantly white actors in the role of an arab, asian or anything role. Though I must say Ben Kingsley did a remarkable job playing Ghandi, so he could probably pull it off.

It might still be a good movie though.
Yeah, I noticed that as well but i'm completely willing to look past that as long as they can pull off the characters personalities well enough. I never saw Ben Kingsley as Ghandi but it sounds interesting enough so maybe i'll take a look.
