Poll: Videogame endings and youtube.

I have no idea how to translate my thoughts into words regarding this subject but bare with me. I'll start with the question and go on from there .

Do you watch the endings of games you are playing on youtube and why?

So for me , the ending of a game is the most important part . I usually play games for story , and how the story ends plays a big part of if i think a game is good or not. It has come to my attention that quite a few people , play through a game , reach the end , and watch the finale on youtube . My personal experience with this is when a friend of mine , who is fairly poor at playing videogames , and i were going through RE5 co-op . We resched the end , and were stuck on the final boss battle ( mainly because my friend kept screwing up the QTE's) , and he says to me :" well if this is the final boss , let's just look up the ending in youtube". That comment warranted him a smack behind the head from me . When we did finally manage to finish the game , i had a sense of satisfaction knowing the we completed it . I asked him if he felt satisfied knowing that he pulled through and got the ending because he deserved it rather than cheating. He replied with a "nah , we could have just looked up the ending, save time and started a different game ". I smacked him again .

I thought about it a bit , noticed comments on threads here about people looking up ending and asked myself why people do it ? Now i know we all don't play games for the same reason , and we don't all care about the same things in regard to games and gaming in general . But if people didn't care about the ending , why even bother looking it up? They must care on some level. Why play through an entire game , and give up at the final stretch . I'm guessing the most popular reason would be because the end game was too hard . Either that or the game has multiple endings.

With youtube and sites like it , videogame endings have become pretty pointless . In the sense that , it's no longer somethin people strive to acheive , because they can just look it up whenever they feel like it to know how the story ends . The ending is no longer carries any weight for gamers, as a milestone , for what they can accomplish with a little bit of effort . Way back before youtube , endings were something you earned , even if it was just s screen with the words , "congratulations , you won the game !". Now they seem to but just there for everyone to see . I forgot where i was going with this and i'm rambling so i'll cut it short here.

Again i'm not looking down on anyone for looking up ending for whatever reason ( live and let live) . I'm curious to if you watch the endings to your games on youtube or not and why. I just want to know what you guys think about this subject . Hopefully this will entice someone to think about it and write a better thread regarding this , because i know i suck at making sense .

I never really understood it either...but then again, I'm the kind of person who if something is spoiled for, will likely just put said thing away and not play it (See Red Dead Redemption; Bioshock 2). I have to be the one to experience it or t just kills the joy for me. I've had "fake spoilers" given to me and it hurts the experience...

The only time I might do it is for multiple endings since it's also very rare that I will replay a game (see above).

If there is a game around I don't fancy playing but want to know the story I do watch the cut scene collections. Kinda like the game in a movie minus the actual gameplay.

But I don't watch endings to games i'm playing .... unless it has multiple endings and the game was too shit to force myself to go through it again.

I watch the endings on youtube if I finish the game myself and think the ending is especially poignant. Fallout 3, RDR, those are the best examples I can think of.

Heck, I don't even let myself listen to a game's soundtrack until I've beaten it.

Bastion wouldn't have had the same impact if I had caved and listened to the ending theme like people told me I should do.

Sure I watched the mass effect 3 endings. I immediately wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

I sort of get why people don't like spoilers, but they don't affect me in the slightest. For me, it's all about the journey. If I know the ending it's not going to change my enjoyment of a game.

That being said I usually don't purposefully go looking for game endings online. I looked up the Mass Effect 3 ending just to see what everyone was talking about, because I have no plans to play that game, but that's really the only time I can think of where I've done that.

I think looking up the ending comes from interest in the story, but not enough to actually go out and play the game.

I find that weird though , can you give an example of a game that you didn't want to play but was interested in the story? Isn't the game about the story being told ?

Not interested in playing it but wanted to see what happened because i'm a curious fella.

Only if I already finished the game, but it has multiple endings. And I don't mean multiple endings that are actually triggered by your behaviour throughout the game, like with Silent Hill 2, but ones where it's simply a Good or Bad choice at the end, like Far Cry 3.

If I have no intrest in buying/playing the game (see ME3) then I'll watch it.

I rarely do watch youtube for endings. I sometimes do for games that I feel I won't finish for a very long time because I just don't get around to them. Like for DA1. And I made an exception with the ME3 endings because the shitstorm had already started and I wanted to know what was in store for me with that. Same with multiple ending games btw, after I finished one playthrough already.

I sometimes watch endings on youtube if I've already finished the game and want to see how other people felt about it. Otherwise, no.

Usually not for games I'm playing, no. I watched the ME3 ending to see what the fuss was about.

Usually the only time I look things up is multiple endings for a game I like but don't have THAT much interest in.

Way back before youtube , endings were something you earned , even if it was just s screen with the words , "congratulations , you won the game !".

And games were designed to screw kids out of quarters, and they spent more time on trying to screw us than tell a story. Let's face it, games have evolved. The end of the story might not even be the end of the game now. So what?

I just want to point out that, in the days before Youtube, most of the kids at my school had seen endings anyway. They just saw them via friends instead of that series of tubes. You only needed to know that one guy, and some people with a basic understanding of technology even recorded the endings. Now, I know what you're thinking: what kind of dark sorcery is this?

I have before either because I got stuck and couldn't finish the game or in the case of some older games like Oni, the patch that makes it work on newer operating systems also prevents it from playing the opening and ending cinematics so if you want to see them Youtube is kind of you only option.

If I get too bored to finish a game but still want to know how it ends then I'll Youtube the sucker. Examples include FFXIII and Farcry 3.

Sometimes when a game has multiple endings I'll youtube the ones I didn't get.

If a game has multiple endings and requires a second play through to experience them I might use youtube to view them. I say might because the game might be good enough to be worth replaying. If it feels like busywork to get an extra cinematic then I will not.

On rare occasions when I've played a game and it had multiple ending, so to not do the last mission again or in some cases play through again I'll just watch the alternate on YouTube. Latest to memory is Farcry 3.

There are 3 reasons I do.
1, i've managed to skip a game's ending cutscene by mistake before (I think it was Arkham City)
2, there are multiple endings and I cba to go back and do everything differently. (often with fallout games)
3, the ending is awesome and i want to watch it again. I've watched some game endings a fair few times, most recently I watched the end of spec ops again after playing it through.

If its a game that has 1 ending though, why spoil it for yourself before playing? I've no idea why people would.

It depends, if it's a game I'm never going to play and not invested in, or a game that I played through part-way and can't stand anymore, I'll watch the ending. Or if I want to play the game, but I don't have the system or money for it. Like I'll watch SSoH play the end of Dead Space 3 because I don't care about playing it, but I care what happens because I liked Dead Space 2.
Or when there is an alternate ending and I don't feel like playing through the whole game again.
