there are just as many bland male characters as female ones. its just that the bland male characters have absolutely no redeemable or memorable features either personally or visually. bland females are usually visually impressive (even if completely unrealistic)

ill also submit that there is a higher ratio of good female characters to bad female characters compared to the male ratio. mostly because there are significantly LESS female characters. although...not that many good female villians that i can recall.

also to the female gamers: if you play a game with a group of people who are predominantly male (like say you are in a guild in a mmo) and some of them pick on you or joke with you, it is not because they hate you or they are picking on you for being female. it is because they accept you into the group.

me and my friends pick on each other relentlessly (but never maliciously, although that line can be hard to see sometimes). when my friend refused to go to dinner with a group of friends because he was on a diet, we called him names until he caved.

point being, if you are playing with a large group of males and they DONT talk to you, THEN they hate/resent you. if they play a practical joke (as long as its not malicious), then you are officially "one of the boys." also, guys are jerks :).

Alot of people are saying that Miranda was way over sexulized in Mass Effect 2, with her skin tight suit which could never accually be made in real life. But then, remember Batman from Batman Arkam Asylum? He was wearing a skin tight suit that perfectally covered all of his beutiful muscles, he had a jaw that was basically a square, he was a genius, a billionare and Batman. Acual men cannot be anything like Batman, just like no women could really be like Miranda.
I think the difference is the camera angles more than anything.

Rarely do you get a face-full of Batman's chiseled buttocks, but, you can expect such things of Miranda in Mass Effect.
I also don't think Batman is the designed around alluring females the same way it is for males with catwoman. He's massively built, almost grotesquely so, to emphasize his level competence(i.e. badass).

Would we ever see a main video game character with the look and build of Johnny Depp in an action game? Women love that guy.

It could be better, but I think that people overreact to it. Yes a lot of female characters dress skimpily, but frankly if they have strong personalities and are capable of doing things (Miranda, Jack, Samara Ashley) then I couldn't care less if their outfit is kinda skimpy. What do you want to make every last woman in a game wear a frock or something?

As a member of the female persuasion.. it has never bothered me in the least.. mostly I just find it funny.. and frankly, the males are generally meatheads so it's a level playing field in my opinion lol

Enough with this false dichotomy. Frock and malformed stripper are not the only two options available. Look at the ladies of Uncharted (Elena and.....claudia black) who still manage to be attractive without being grotesquly proportioned and dressed. Likewise, being "capable" isn't really an excuse, since most of the time it just comes off cheap.

Ya know with that comic you pretty much proved Erttheking right with the overreaction part.

What? How? The whole point of the comic is "Nearly all "strong" female characters are bullshit"

This. The implication is that the usual idea of a "strong female character" seems to be either straw-feminist or neurotic mess. And that's just the ones who aren't faux action girls (i.e. alleged badasses who nonetheless keep needing to be rescued).

For games portrayal of women:

Their attitude towards women is improving with more additions of tough chicks, tomboys, etc...

They could do something about the unrealistically huge breasts some of them carry (I'm looking at you soul caliber), I mean seriously? Ivy carries her body mass in each breast easily.

That's... pretty much the only thing that bothers me on the issue. Maybe it's because I'm a gamer chick, I stopped caring, or that it... intrigues as well, that I'm not as bothered as other women.

For other gamers attitude towards women:

I never had an issue with this personally, but that battlefield 3 thing just seems excessive, incredibly stupid, and it just screams: sue me. How is it women's fault for that? The 'It takes two people to start an argument' comes to mind.

I never really had problems with anyone online except for those rare people that just talk shit no matter the situation, then again I imagine everyone has a problem with trolls...

Yeah...because I like and play alot of games, listen to rap and have started to get interested in comics (speaking of which Im guessing your Liara Avatar is from the cover of "ME:redemption..reading it now :p)

I tend to give some of this stuff a little leeway (alot in raps case),hell when I think about it I have to do this with movies too somitmes

that doesnt mean I dont think it should improve or that I dont have a problem with some charachters (theres ALOT of room for improvment)

but in the end I can eather enjoy the work or get my undies in a twist over it...and theres only so much of that one can take

I'm sorry to necro this thread but I found this today and it just kind of underlined with a big massive black pen the problems with how women are portrayed in certain media.

It also made me laugh quite a lot.

She's such a strong female character she has gained the super power of contortion!
