There's been a lot of heated debate on the net about this topic and how violent video games relate to violence and such. here's the thing people, firstly the only times video games have been related to real violence is in psychopaths; (ex. columbine) And if the son of Sam thought his teddy bear was the devil would you ban teddy bears? Secondly, we have a great rating system. We have M ratings and Ao ratings for truly excessive games. Sure it's voluntary but so are movie ratings! Gamestop, bestbuy, these stores won't sell minors M rated video games. And lastly, Torrents. If your kid has a computer with internet then what games you decide are not okay for them is irrelevant.

Alright, this is the Escapist, as well as a gaming forum; no one is going to vote "yes".
Especially considering that the question was about America, which has this little thing called the First Amendment ;)

I would say no. its on the parents to decide what is good for their kids. I mean, we have he ESRB rating system, and if the kid is using a realistic fake ID, there's obviously more problems then them owning an M rated game.

So no. Parents, take what you're called to heart, and parent.

If the goal is for excessive video games to be successful, then by all means ban it. The best way to make something more desirable is to tell people they can't have it.

Not banning games that are excessive but crappy has shown just how intelligent and discriminating the gamers of today are. Games like BMX XXX, Manhunt, and The Guy Game had limited success because the core gameplay was lacking even if the game contained explicit content.

I voted no. I never got the concept of not selling a game to a minor. I mean if their a minor they live in their parents house and if their not mature enough to play this game shouldn't their parent understand this and stop them from playing a game? I mean if your a parent complaining against violent video games that your kid plays do something about it unless you stupid enough not to have noticed it. Secondly, Video games are an art form, just like movies and books. To give an example, Dragon Age told an amazing, well crafted story and if it were a movie it would at least win one Oscar. Now, because it's a videogame should you think any differently about it, any less? What about Mass Effect, a game with a good and deep story? Why would be ban these things because their too excessive? Sometimes excess is good and usually in games it makes the gameplay more fun and the story more emmersive and meaningful.

(Insert long sigh here)

There's no place for violence in video games, that should be left up to other forms of media. Video games are for kids, and kids should never have any idea of violence. Ever.

The whole controversy surrounding violent video games is mostly about political and social saber rattling. Violent things never get banned in America; now show a boob and that'll get you a ban.

I can just see it: America bans violent video games, then imported violent games become a hot seller on the black market. Developers who work in America & secretly distribute are raided by the police & given prison sentences for doing what Hollywood does a millionty times a year. The new speakeasies will be underground Lan parties. The Political Correctness Brigade starts finding other things in games they want censored or banned outright. Next thing you know, the most badass games you can buy legally are Barbie's Pink Unicorn Rodeo & Hello Kitty Camping Online. DOOM!

If you don;t stand up for your rights to play bloody gorey games today, THIS could be the future of Laura Croft:

It would be awful because my game selection would be drastically reduced since I visit USA to buy games and yes I refuse to call they're country America because the whole continent is called that you guys should have thought of a better name for you're country, besides since everybody hates the people from the USA when they insult them it feels like they are insulting us in the other parts of the continent and North America does not work either because geographically speaking both Canada and my beautiful country Mexico (no really we have all kinds of landscapes even if most of our cities are not that great) are in North America.

Fuck No. All this rabble-rousing about the issue is only started uptight conservatives looking to increase their political standing by crying out against a topic they have absolutely no understanding of.

No game deserves to be banned, just like no book/song/movie deserves similar treatment.

Same here, I'm leaving if this actually happens... fucking nanny state crap. It sickens me that this is what we've become as a nation.

I'm from the U.S., and it bugs me too -- but it's not the official name of the country; that would be "The United States of America," which is a fairly accurate name -- we're a collection of states, located in America, who are united under one flag. Just calling it "America," while everyone generally knows what is being talked about, is an inaccurate but simple and useful enough shorthand.
