No. Voodoo is something Hollywood made up.
Vodoun is certainly real, though. It's a Catholic/traditional African syncretic religion with many adherents, that generally revolves around spirit-saints known as lwa, who serve as guardians and intermediaries between the religion's practitioners and God. And admittedly, "voodoo" is sometimes an accepted spelling.
I don't know about Hoodoo, though. That's something entirely different (a system of magic, not a religion).

Well no, not really. Also it has nothing to do with sticking pins in dolls to cause people pain, that was a total fabrication by the christian missionaries to get people to convert.
Actually it doesn't look more like "terrorist". The fact that many people still interpreted it that way shows how well the "Terrorism-Fear-Propaganda" has worked on all of us. Especially considering that according to the definiton of terrorism, the people who declare "war on terror" are the biggest terrorists themselves. Sorry, got off track there..Kragg said:
As for voodoo: It is real. I was in Trinidad/Tobago and met people who still practice it. And people did practive it a lot in the past. So it is real in the sense of a cultural phenomenon.
Do i think it works? Yes, to the degree that in can influence your psychology and through that: your body and mind. And that can be a LOT of influence. People that get cursed for example really can get sick and die for no reason. Just because they believe in the curse makes their brains/bodies try to fullfill the prophecy and they become sick. Same as some people really get better by using homeopathy, acupuncture and the like.
As for any superstitious or metaphysical powers. No can do. If it could we would use that on a massive scale to our advantage by now.
I think there's an element of truth in a lot of superstitious things like this, but I think it all stems from psychological effects.
A lot of people seem to be misinterpreting the question. I'm saying Yes. Voodoo is as real as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and a bunch of other religions. It is based on a mix of Christianity (there is one big G God in Voodoo and he is the same one as in Christianity, Islam and Judaism) and traditional African beliefs brought over by slaves. Whether you believe in Voodoo or not is up to you, but it is real thing.
It could be real for the people who believe in it. I don't think it would have any effect on me because I don't believe in it myself. That said, I do think and have experienced things that make me think there is more between heaven and earth, so I won't say it doesn't exist.
There's every possibility that it is real, just as there's every possibility that things like Spiritualism and telepathy and whatnot are real. Unlikely, but still possible. Thing is, we haven't proven scientifically that these things don't exist, and we have no idea what the extent of the mind's powers, or natural laws of nature and science, are yet. There are still tons of things we don't know. So, there is every possibility in the world that all these things are real, and we just don't understand them yet. Don't dismiss something out of hand, unless you can decisively prove that it's not actually real.
