Wait for Win 7 its gonna be a pile of naggy broken bollocks but itll still be better than Vista.

Procure a XP copy for the duration.
You don't have to be bitter about missing the beta anymore...the RC is out.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop in the next 6 months and was wondering if those of you who have used both OS can help me decide. I definitely do not like using Vista. I'm not an ignorant consumer who hates things for no reason. I just feel that Vista missed the point of a "Work computer" (If I want play time I'll buy a Mac). Also, Vista is really stupid when it comes to my wireless but I blame my ISP for that really.
Anyway, I've heard good things about Windows 7 and am asking if it's worth the wait. I plan on buying a buisness model for longjevity, so I want an OS that I can use smoothly with as little hickups as possible. I have no experience with Linux and very little with Macs.
So what do you suggest, buy XP or hold out?

For those of you who say other please specify
NEVER buy an OS at release, mostly considering Microsoft's reputation.

If I were you, I would choose Vista. In a year or so XP will become what 98 is now (Compatible, but old and not aesthetically pleasing), and Vista is a very nice OS, despite common opinion (common being the opinion of those mac commercials which evoke violent urges in me that involve hedge clippers and severed heads).
never buy anything as soon as it comes out, Microsoft or otherwise. Its too expensive and it will have too many bugs

Well...if you don't want to get Linux...

I suppose windows 7...
Windows 7 RC will be free for an entire year? It got a lot more application compatible with it?
I say get it.

Linux is free forever but there you're fucked if you want techy support.
Oh I don't know. The Ubuntu forums can be really helpful.
Fun fact: most supercomputers run Linux.

I use Win7 at work, and it's pretty slick. It is much more efficient with memory than Vista, and is very user-friendly.

If you are going for longevity, I would definitely warn you against going with XP; Microsoft has announced that they are discontinuing support for XP sometime next year.

Get Windows 7, it's awesome. It even has a Windows XP mode (Or at least i read it should have it.) but i haven't had any compatibility issues or any problems at all so i had no need to check. Also right now you can actually get Windows 7 for free for a whole year.

Given the imminent discontinuation of support for XP, I'd advocate waiting for Windows 7 myself. That said, games and other bleeding edge software aside, XP will almost certainly fulfil one's objectives for the next few years.

And, for the record, Vista probalby had the smoothest launch of any MS OS I've ever observed. And most of the compliants I hear from people have nothing to do with Microsofts work, but rather the work of third party developers. I didn't have decent support for my video card for 6 months with Vista - can I blame Microsoft for the fact that the Nvidia vendor neglected to write one? In all reality, most of the problems people I talk to seem to have are either a) Vista looks different than XP and they'll be damned if they have to learn something new or b) They HEARD vista sucked and therefore they assumed it was the gospel truth.

I am aware that there were many problems with Vista, but I also remember the terrible problems XP had for the first year or so after launch. It's all part of the process at microsoft it would seem.

I'd say get a copy of Windows Server 2008.

It's like a stable version of Vista!

Only you have to manually install a buncha drivers and change a lot of settings during the initial setup, but if you are willing to jump through a few hoops you can get a really good, stable gaming platform.

Woah, 7 looks fast. Of course, compatibility will still be questionable, but if games start running on it right away, I might seriously consider buying it at release.

What are you using your PC for?

EDIT: It doesn't matter, because you can get the Windows 7 Beta for free right now, so you should. I think it uses less resources than XP, but if it uses more, it's not enough to matter.

Why buy a Mac for a play comp? Macs have absolutely no games, and anything you can do on a mac for "play" you can do better on a PC.
