I intend to use the laptop for college and am looking at Vosotro buisness models. I heard that you can use 4 gigs of ram on some of those without going into 64-bit. As for gaming, I use websites and I'm a console jocky so I don't need that in my pc. What I need is longevity and multitasking speed.

a 32 bits OS will see 3.5 gb of RAM.

right now you can install free the RC1 edition of windows 7, but beware that if you buy it after, you will need to reformate you're whole computer to do a clean install of the official release.

but expect to see boxes of windows 7 on the shelfs before november...

You can just use Windows 7 RC till March 2010, then buy retail (or a bit earlier).

Seriously, since I dual-boot installed a W7 on my XP PC, I have changed only TWICE.

1. To burn a CD (I don't have Nero on this windows, and I don't remember where I left my CD-Key = can't activate it).
2. Print some papers for my parents (don't have Word on Windows 7, and my laptop can't detect the printer in my home network).

Other than that, I'm using Windows 7 all the freakin' time. Games, videos, music, downloading, everything.

Still waiting to find a good DirectX 10 game, though.

Get XP. Windows 7 still has a lot of the problems of Vista (it's just a Vista upgrade, not a new operating system). Stuff Vista wouldn't run, won't run on Windows 7 either.

May I ask what it is that Vista won't run? So far I've only had trouble running DOS games, but you can chalk that up to running 64 bit. And besides, I would use DOSbox even if I was running XP.

I seem to hear a lot that Vista can't run stuff. It may be the case, but what are we talking about? Which applications won't run?

I have Vista, and would never touch XP again if I had too.
Same here. I was reluctant to use Vista, i said that it was harder to use, but i was given a laptop with Vista in it and i got used to it. There area lot improvements in Windows navigation and security. To keep using XP to access the internet is to ask to be penetrated. Besides, why use a 5+ years old OS? I wouldn't install or have installed XP on a new computer.

Bump??

Also what is wrong with vista?
Bump = to get the thread to the top of the page again, as far as I know. A technique to keep it in view if there is no responses.

Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Windows 7 is just Vista 2.0, I don't care what anyone says. It's just as annoying and not user friendly as far as I'm concerned. Get XP, for more stable and far easier to use.

EDIT: Guess I should've read ALL of the comments before posting. Seems this thread is full of people that know nothing about code or operating systems other than how to play their music.
To the OP, take what you read in here with a very large grain of salt. Check out some tech sites with people who KNOW what they're talking about and aren't all clueless and all about the "eye candy" that the those garbage OS's are (Vista, 7).

I've never understood the bad reputation that Vista has. I've been running the 64-bit Ultimate version since launch, first on an HP tablet PC, then my custom built tower, now my XPS laptop. I've done video and dvd editing and creation with both the built-in stuff and later Adobe products, gaming, general productivity applications, media sharing, e-mail, internet, and even GPS software/hardware on the mobile PCs. Everything worked fine.

If you really don't like Vista, try Windows 7, but just realize that you'll have to wipe an existing box to install it, and wipe it again wether you decide to go with it or install something else. XP support is on the way out, but it is stable enough that you probably won't need it, except for security updates.

Obviously you don't use many open source programs. MS requires digital signing of all drivers/programs that run on the 64 bit version of Vista. This means people that make high quality, free programs, for people to use would have to pay MS ~$500 a year to "sign" their programs and make them work on Vista 64. The 32 bit version doesn't have this BS in it at least, but it's still garbage.

yeah but again 90% of the people here will not code anything for the OS and mess with the system files. For most people as long as you computer play your music files fine, play your games with a good FPS, recognize your hardware when you plug it and dont crash all the time, then you have a good OS.

Oh guess what, windows 7 and vista post sp1 do all that...

Yes they do, but it's ignorance to think that, that's what makes a good OS.

EDIT: And since that seems to be all that people on here want, why spend ~$400 for an OS that's mostly fluff when you can spend ~$100 for XP?

Oh! Sorry! I had something awesome in my throat. Namely: Linux.
Why pay for an OS at all? Especially one as bloated as Windows?

Well, I'm not sure to which open-source applications you are refering. Perhaps you should explain your definition of "open-source". It sounds like you're talking about "freeware", a term that my not be used anymore, but might be synonymous with your definition of open-source. I always thought "open-source" referred to a program that left it source code unlocked or "open" to be manipulated as the user saw fit for modding and such, but those aren't necessarily free, nor would all freeware be open-soruce. Anyway, I have installed freeware applications just fine, and I know that the authors couldn't afford to pay Microsoft any money. I also have used software described as open-source. I think even I did see "not digitally signed" but it allowed me to bypass.

still my point is that what make a good OS for you, might not be the same as what's make a good OS to somebody else. And general opinion in the VARs/LARs and IHV/ISV channels is that windows 7 is pretty strong. Now if you dont like it, it doesnt make it a weak OS

Beside, windows vista home premium (which is good for 80% of people, unless you really want to do remote desktop or use bitlocker) is something like 130$ now. and i think that windows 7 on launch for home premium will probably be sold 200$ something. So i dont really see where you take your 400$ here...
