I always buy an official strategy guide for use with an RPG but I usually do a normal run through to get the story, then do a 100% run through after I have beaten the game.
If it is a game with collectibles which affect achievements, then I will pick up a guide and use it only to get those.
I know that is slight achievement-whoring but I like to get as much as I can out of a game.
Bit off-topic but I will say that im a bit of an official strategy guide lover though; I have about 20 guides over many years from different games (mostly JRPG's).
I always get the special edition guide if possible too, like to have nice looking guides.
My fave company is Piggyback (beautiful guides) and my current fave guide is the FFXIII limited edition one.. lovely guide
