I prefer the first Dawn of War game and its expansions. My only major complaint with it is that the Space Marines aren't as powerful as they're depicted in other sources. Fortunately there are some excellent mods that address this. Also, I play offline Skirmish the most when it comes to RTS games, and DoW 1 delivers in spades, with an extremely varied selection of different races with their own strengths and weaknesses (I'm an Imperial Guard fan myself). Finally, there are several mods out there that add new factions, which extends its replay factor even more.

Don't get me wrong, Dawn of War II is still a fun game. The Space Marines are as powerful as they should be in the campaign, and Last Stand mode is quite enjoyable if you've got good teammates. However, I found Skirmish lacking in DoW II. It's nearly impossible to completely destroy the enemy since Relic gave the bases ridiculous amounts of hit points, and I find control point victories boring. I mean c'mon, this is Warhammer 40k we're talking about. With the possible exception of the Tau, every faction's goal is to completely annihilate all other forces.

Retribution is out in march
What?

There's a new one coming out? Are you serious?

Woooooooo!!

OT: I like them both for different reasons, I'm a 40k nut so I actively play both.

EDIT: That new Retribution expansion looks awesome, I can't believe I hadn't heard about it. That's going to be a killer campaign by the looks of it.

This links to most of the previews for the other races.

Much prefered 2 - felt like a proper tactical thing where I cared about my troops and cared about keeping them alive - both for tactical and sentimental reasons

Also, it looks AWESOME and I loved the different layouts you could have for Space Marines (where the paint-colours went) so I could make some Sons of Medusa - which is awesome

DoW2 for campaign.
DoW Dark Crusade with the Firestorm over Kronus mod [http://www.moddb.com/mods/dawn-of-warhammer-40k-firestorm-over-kronus] for multiplayer.
I was wondering how long it would take me to find someone mentioning this mod. Pretty much makes Dark Crusade one of the best RTS' that I've played. So I guess I'm going with one.

They are both good games that turn massively shit towards the end. 1 has soulstorm, 2 has the final part of chaos rising with the vehicle section, escort mission and incredibly stupid final boss next to eachother.

Like them both for different reasons.

DoW1 lets you produce huge armies, resulting in absolutely epic battles, and the base-building is as good as in any other RTS out there. (Aside from WoW,) Dark Crusade is probably the game I've spent the most time on ever.
DoW2 makes proper use of RPG elements, does a great job of characterizing the lead characters (which gets you more invested in the already well-written story) and ditches the base-building for a more tactical gameplay approach, and this actually makes the campaign feel a lot closer to the fluff - instead of a huge army, you're a small unit of elite warriors, each a mighty, ironclad bulwark against the vast hordes of aliens and heretics threatening to overwhelm the Imperium of Man.

Re-reading what I just wrote I realize I do like DoW2 better. That said, DoW1 was still hugely enjoyable.

for me dawn of war 2 was a completely different and much worse game than dow 1. its more like an rpg or something than a rts game.

I really want to like Dawn of War 2, I'm better with small groups of units than big armies. But the fucked up match-making, thanks GFWL, really makes me hate it.

I'm going to go with 2, just because I loved the RPG elements in the campaign, as well as how they tried to characterize your units so you actually cared for them. It just made it feel more like you were actually playing as the Space Marines, each warrior able to smash through dozens of enemy troops, which I really didn't feel in the first one.

Also, points for Cyrus burning Iron Lore's Soulstorm expansion:

Boreale? You mean B-B-B-B-B-BOREALE:
I bet they lost that campaign thanks to a lack of multiple, simultaneous, defensive and simultaneous, multiple, defensive and multiple, devastating, simultaneous deep strikes.

Dawn of War 2, for several reasons. The first is that DoW 2 is much closer to the background universe than the first game(Tactical squads that turn into Devastator Squads when you upgrade them? Erm, no). The second is that I'm primarily interested in single-player in RTS/RTT games, not multiplayer, and single-player DoW2 was a far more cohesive and enjoyable experience.

The final reason is perhaps the most important; holy shit the voiceover guy in Dark Crusade was terribad. I mean seriously, it's a good thing I read quickly enough that I could go through the text entirely before the voiceover hit the end of the first paragraph, or else I would have gone mad listening to his terrible attempt to sound...I don't even know what he was going for, epic? Welsh? *bleurgh*
