Poll: Was Final Fantasy VII even that good?

FF VII is an amazing game to JRPG fans for the same reason Halo is an amazing game to FPS fans: personal opinion. You don't like it? Congratulations! Go play something else.

I take offense from that, what with my being both a (j)RPG and FPS fan.

I still play it every now and again, so I guess it was that good to me.

After never playing a final fantasy game (aside form crystal chronicles, though that hardly counts) I decided to actually play one of the games before ranting about how bad they are etc.

Having settled to play FF7 I was actually quite shocked that it slowly began to grow on me, and as I got further into it the more I was enjoying it. Considering I tend to lack motivation when it comes to playing older games I guess that means FF7 is pretty good =P

I agree. Usually old games, especially PS1 games (they were starting to try 3D technology, so I guess in retro gaming they tend to fall into the "Uncanny Valley") can't hold my interest for an hour or so, I get bored of them pretty quickly. Also, I usually hate turn-based RPGs, but when I started playing FFVII, I just played and played and played it, and I enjoyed it.

I think that shows how great a game is. I was, like, 7 or something when I played it first, but I didn't, by far, play through the whole thing myself, but I really liked it. 6-7 years later, I played it again, and man, it was great.

How can anyone love FFX? The voice acting was atrocious and unbearable, especially Yuna. My god at least hire an actress that can read english, that poor girl was stumbling over her lines thoughout the whole game.

I though 7 had more likable characters, Yuffie, Barret and Cid versus Wakka.

I'm a big fan of both genres as well (they are pretty much all I play) and I don't want to derail this thread, but I agree with you about Halo. I was merely pointing out that every genre has it's fanboys. But at the same time, someone can think a game is great or awful without being a fanboy or bandwagon hater, respectively.

the crux of this issue i've pointed out a few times to people is that it is one of those things you had to be there for it. when it came out RPG's were getting pretty stale and back into the boring territory and all of a sudden out comes this game which had decent graphics an immersing storyline a decent combat and levelling system IF ( and quite a big one at that ) you were into that sort of thing. personally i played it when it came out and it was like the holy grail since then i've played lots more RPG's and found many that in one way or another totally outdo it but then nostalgia and more than a bit of cynicism kick in and i start picking to pieces the bits that FF7 did better than whichever game in question it is. in all honesty though while FF7 was an epic for it's time sadly that time is over now and people need to understand that
