Is that a thing? I never did, never seen anybody doing it, even at a restaurant or a party, those had dishwashers and the person responsible wasn't just cleaning.

But in media it appears to be a thing and I always found that to be weird, not on restaurants after the main characters didn't pay the bill, that made complete sense.

I personally don't mind since the water and the soap do all of the work, although having to clean it again because the smell didn't come off gets annoying.

I always wear gloves. Gotta keep my hands free from stuff that would harm my eyes.

I think it has more to do with the temperature of the water, although I could see someone with a skin condition wanting to wear gloves.

I don't wear gloves. You shouldn't be holding your hands under the water for extended periods of time anyway. Just let the dishes sit for a minute, then grab'em and wipe the stuff off.

I did that when I was working as a kitchen porter, in case someone absent-mindedly put a knife in the sink along with the plates. Place gets busy, it happens. Also, a good pair of gloves (Marigolds are champion) will keep the skin on your hands from breaking, which stings when it occurs around the knuckles. On top of that, you can just remove your gloves and go on to do something else in the kitchen without having to wash your hands rigorously first.

I don't see much of a point in me putting on gloves to rinse something before plopping it in the dishwasher.

I'm so old school. I don't use gloves for washing up. I don't use gloves for brickwork. My hand isn't soft. It's hard and course and good for heavy duty shit.

Lol I don't. In our workplace you're not allowed to put a knife in a sink if you're not the one washing it. Usually I'm the one washing it so I chuck them all in and go to town though.

Just gotta be gentle. ;)

Not really.

Even then if I washing sharp stuff like knife. I leave them near the sink first before washing them. That way when it come to washing then, I hold them therefore I got more control than a potential accidental cut from them leaving them at the sink and the water is muggy from the dishwasher.

Having been a professional dishwasher, YES! I wear gloves. It protects you hands in so many different ways. If you are washing a single plate or two, you don't need gloves. If you are washing dishing for 8 hours straight, trust me you will need gloves.

Most certainly. There's something that a lot of people don't realize (well, okay, there are thousands of such things, but this is one they really should know): soap doesn't smell clean. It smells like soap. If the dishes smell like soap when you're done washing them, they don't smell clean- they may in fact be clean; a great many soaps these days are perfumed with scents designed to stick around- but they don't smell that way.

If I don't want that on my dishes, why on Earth would I want that on my hands?

I do. I've worked as a dishwasher before, and while I've never been a fan of sticking my hands in hot water, I'm even less enthusiastic about doing it for six or eight hours straight.

Dish soap and hot water aren't very manicure friendly, nor all that great for your skin.

Gloves ftw.

A couple of plates: No gloves
A sink full of dishes: Gloves. I always regret it when I forget.

Lots 'o grime gets on your hands and hot water + lots of soap is harsh for your skin.

Aye, I'll agree with gloves in a more "professional" setting, where you have to regularly do the dishes. Additionally, some of the chemicals commercial kitchens use will melt your hands. Got some eczema something fierce, so gloves all the way.

But at home I can choose my cleaning products, so I can get away with not having to wear gloves anymore.

Soap detergent can cause dermatitis and that sucks, so if you don't have a dishwasher, then it is a good idea to use them ... on the other hand it's like wearing a helmet while wearing a bike, you should but come on, nobody does!

As for knives, I hope you're all talking about knives you use to butter your bread and not to dice chicken, unless your knives are so blunt Bob Marley could smoke them.

Try working in a busy kitchen where you have to wash hundreds of dishes, pots and pans a day, without wearing gloves.
All the water, leftover food, grease and especially the washing up liquid will destroy your hands.

At home?
ONLY if I have a cut or something that needs to be kept clean/under a band-aid.

At work?
I've worked in labs with some NASTY stuff, so...yeah...double and even triple gloved there.
