I've played a fair few games in my time and I can't actually think of a single one where I thought... "Yay, a water section. I'm sure this will excellent fun and won't handle like a Robin Reliant on a bouncy castle"

Why do developers insist on water sections or even worse, water sections in everyone's favourite sewer level? I personally think it's because they are all against me and don't want me to enjoy the game. A more likely reason is that they are all insane and should be sectioned.

Ninja Gaiden II is a classic example of why it's stupid to put water sections in games. Swimming in Ninja Gaiden II is the most frustrating thing I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Okay, so you can pull a Jesus and water run but what good is that when you got giant fish chopping at your legs? I hate fish (-.-) Once again, another game has been ruined for me because of shitty water sections. Well, technically it was the enemies with rocket launchers started to pop up that ruined it and took away all the fun but still... you get my point.

Any way, I want to know what you, the people of the Escapist, think of water sections. Excellent fun or the cause of increased rates of suicide in gamers?

Depends on the game. Water sections in the old Sonic games were rubbish, Water Hazard in Half-Life 2 was mediocre, and the lake boss in Resident Evil 4 was awesome.

I dont really mind. As long as its well executed and isnt shoved into a game for no reason, I have no quarrels.
What I was going to say. Bioshock did water well.

Water never bothered me too much except for sonic and a few Zelda games. Those water temples were ridiculous.

Yes, Bioshock did do water well but to it's credit (and my memory).... it never made you actually do any sections underwater

They don't really bother me all that much...

Except for Zelda, the prime, famous example of when water is a bad thing to find...

The water parts in Super Mario Bros. were a headache to get passed if you lost your Fire Flower. Also the Bloopers were the single most annoying enemy in the game. I don't mind the water parts in a Legend of Zelda game though.

RE4 water boss was awesome, especially when he nommed me off the shore of the lake.
Water temple in LoZ:OOT was sort of a *****, but that wasn't because of the water itself, more the whole raise/lower puzzle that made it hard to find my way around. LoZ:WW did water pretty well i think, though you actually didn't spend much time IN water, but in a boat (opposed to water temple where you'r under water)
Loved the water maps in Mario 64/galaxy, especially the one in 64 with the sunken ship and the huge eel, it was awesome

So i guess I sort of like the occasional water levels in games.

Honestly, I haven't found a very "well" made water level in any game I have played, albeit I am limited to PC and a little bit of Sega/Nintendo and Wii. Every water level I have ever come across I wanted to stab, its 3d movement but, just doesn't translate well to gaming, at all for me.

As an aside, I really hate the Zero-G levels in most games too, most notably Crysis.

I don't really like water levels, especially in FPSs and TPSs, where you have a limited air supply and are more vulnerable to attack.

But I'm rather excited about water levels in the upcoming BioShock 2, since I don't think you'll be able to drown. I think they'll just be more interesting puzzle-type sections.

Sonic: Terrible.
Zelda: Terrible.
Mario: Terrible.
Metroid Prime: Decent.
Dungeon Lords: Decent. (Naga temple was very cool, especially the boss fight)
Bioshock: I don't think it counts.

It depends on the game.

Generally, I don't like them, but...they're really not bad. Just the ones I've seen have been bad for the most part... >.>

Some are very nice though. Can't think of many.

There really isn;t a water level I enjoy because most of them involve breath limits of some kind. At least in Banjo Tooie's water level, the water is oxygenated by Mumbo's magic, and to make things easier, the transformation for that level is a submarine. Not a very well done swimming action, but at least the two magic users in said level really made things tolerable.

They're not so bad unless you can drown in them, like Sonic. Those bloody air bubbles never showed up in time.

In DDO they are more of a nuissance than anything...most players aren't in any danger because of them with the appropriate gear.

God of War water levels aren't bad since there's no combat and no breath limit. But the control scheme for swimming is a little annoying.
