Tommorow is rememberance day, a day for remembering the terrible price of the wars fought throughout human history. However, far too often, the price paid by civilians is ignored or glossed over.
To those so inclined, wear a white poppy to remember the civilians killed during war. Remember those who paid with thier lives for others ambitions, morals and rewards. Remember those who had no choice over what they were dying for, remember those who have to often been simply numbers on a page.
Remember both the cost paid by soldiers, who marched off to war, to defend thier people, thier famillies and thier lands, and remember those who paid in blood for the folly of others.

I would wear a white poppy but no where sells them. I'll make do with a red one and keep the civi's close at mind tomorrow.

Interesting idea that, if it's new.
I think I will, as no-one seems to praise the civilian's that had no choice, but never gave up.
So yes, I will.

By all means wear your white poppy, but don't let it stop you giving a donation for the red.

It's too well-established a tradition, and too good a cause to be usurped by something else that's just come along no matter how good an idea it is.

Huh iirc theirs a hub-dub going on in Canada over people saying the white poppy marginalizes the vets because white is pro peace, love and pacifism.

I would wear a white poppy but I can't be bothered painting my red poppy white. I will proudly wear my red poppy though:)

What is with this whole white poppy versus red poppy thing, anyway? It's so petty. It dishonors all those who need to be remembered and distracts from the entire purpose. I'll wear a chartreuse poppy, if necessary.

I'd wear both, but I've never heard of the white poppies, let alone seen them. But I'll be wearing the red one tomorrow.

Also, would it kill to give pins with the poppies? I've had 3 gimpy ones that just stick to you with glue (no stalk or anything)and I lost the one with the plastic stalk because it fell off and I didn't notice.

White poppies were introduced in the 20s; another user went into it in more detail when that other guy got major sand-in-the-vaginal-zone syndrome and ranted on about how wearing a white poppy was such a huge crime against humanity.

Also off-topic, but to The_Fuzz: tradition =/= better.

The white poppy is essentially the same as a Red poppy except the white poppy is also a protest to sending more people to war. We honour those in the war every year yet we still send people to their deaths.

i thought the white poppy was a symbol for the hope it would never be nessecary agian, hence if you wore red and white you where remebering the soldiers while hopeing their sacrifice wouldnt be needed again

I see. So, basically they're taking a day that is supposed to honor those who've given their lives to serve and turning it into an anti-war/military political statement. They're just full of tact, aren't they.

Hey I'm not implying that following tradition is implicitly a better direction to take, but I think this different coloured poppy nonsense raises more trouble than good. Apart from anything else you'll notice I welcome others to wear the white, but just ask that they don't simply forget the red in doing so.

On a slightly related note, I just reread this entire thread replacing "poppy" with "poopy" in my inner voice..
Hilarity ensued.

This was what I meant about usurping an established tradition :)

I wear a red poppy, its tradition, I've gone through 3 this week (seatbelt in the car chewing them up), but I'm perfectly happy to buy some more.

I'm in full support of sharing cake to remember the fallen.

In fact if I were dying on the battlefield, my dying words would be "you guys should eat cake, like totally".

I prefer to keep rememberence day my own way, buy my friends drinks and share in a toast to fallen soldiers, then listen to Marillions's 'Forgotten Sons'.

You're supporting different sides of the same coin pretty much - I don't see what people's issue is.

If you read what he said, it's the same but also shows objection to needlessly sending people to war, and it's not new-wave hippies or anything like that, they've been around as long as the reds almost.
