I'm personally against any sorts of drugs, and would never use them myself... but I firmly believe that each individual has the right to decide for themselves what they do and do not do with *their own bodies* and that no government has the right to decide that for them. As long as they don't hurt anyone while they're high, I couldn't care less what they do... and if they do hurt people, well there's already laws against assault, murder, manslaughter, etc. There's really no need for making this illegal. Its a waste of money, and if the goal is to reduce drug-induced crimes, then simply stiffen the penalties for the existing crimes if you're found to be under the influence while committing them, not making the fact of being under the influence illegal in and of itself.

For legalisation, but equally for protecting the ability for companies to discriminate their hiring practices based on "voluntary" tests.

I always believed thats one of the main reasons its illegal (I don't smoke btw) because how would parents tell they're children that consuming drugs was socially acceptable?
The same way they tell their children that consuming alcohol and tobacco is socially acceptable.

7/10, would rage again.

Let's make it legal. Then the government can tax it and make some money. Also, it's cheaper to make weed legal because you won't have stoners in jail for just smoking a plant.

Legal - though I won't touch the stuff myself, its a waste of time to prosecute potheads when the justice system can be working on more important things.
this.

one of my friends went to court for allegedly selling marijuana to minors when he didn't but of course the legal system fucked him over for a couple of weeks until the charges were finally dropped.

OT: its funny how they trust people to do the right thing with alcohol, yet the government assumes people are incapable of making rational decisions when it comes to marijuana

Legalize!

My life is in far less danger when I spark up a jeffrey. I bust a chill, saving me money, not getting into drunken fights or destroying my liver, not waking up with a hangover.

To Amsterdam!

I'm an advocate of decriminalize, legalize, tax and regulate. In general, outlawing such things leads to a black market and passively increases criminalisation and organised crime, which overall have a far worse effect than the thing you're outlawing. Not to mention there are plenty of studies that indicate that poverty is a much strong factor and should be what's targeted. Not that people pay attention to science much.

as long as the amount being handed out was in government managed enclosed rooms away from the public and the eyes of children.

I've smoked weed practically every single day throughout my college career, sometimes even before tests or while studying. I get awesome grades on everything all the time and am graduating this May with a 3.7 GPA. The notion that smoking weed turns you into a bum with no ambition is entirely constructed from social stereotypes; I would say that it has benefited me greatly, helping me to regulate my stress levels in a high-pressure academic environment so that I am not consumed by anxiety all the time.

Personally, I am for it. Smoking weed is like smoking tobacco (which is perfectly legal), granted that the chances of lung problems and cancer are much higher with marijuana then tobacco. Smoking weed is also much more dangerous, in my opinion, than drinking (which is perfectly legal).
Gah! I know you politely said this is your opinion, but seeing these 2 arguments in one paragraph makes me want to gouge my eyes out and eat them! Before I explode into a ranting beast from hell, I want to ask you: Have you ever smoked pot?

(As you can deduce, I voted Legal...)

Legalize it. Its basically harmless.

I'll fire an employee if I catch him toking on the job, same as I would if he was drinking. But as soon as the day ends, I'll happily spark one and crack a beer with the crew.

Legalise.

In the Netherlands cannabis is legal. In the USA it's not.

Under 25% of all Dutch people have used cannabis in their lifetime. Over 40% of all American people have used cannabis in their lifetime.

Around 5% of all Dutch people have used cannabis in the past year. Around 10% of all American people have used cannabis in the past year.

http://www.drugwarfacts.org/cms/node/67

So basically a country where cannabis is illegal has, relatively, twice as many users as a country where it's legal?

Compared to the rest of Europe the Netherlands is about average or just below in cannabis usage. With less use then the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and most western countries but more usage then the Scandinavian and eastern countries.

So really, at worst it won't change things at all. At best it will half usage.

Granted, you'll likely see a huge increase in the first year as people try the 'new' thing out before they realise it really isn't that huge a deal and leave it alone.

Either outlaw booze or legalize and regulate weed.
^This

Alcohol is SO much worse, for one thing it enhances aggression, have you ever heard of someone who beats their wife because they go into marijuana feuled rages? Fuck no, pot chills you out.

Also, you can't overdose on pot, which is a massive advantage over alchohal. To OD on alcohol, you need to take 5-10 times what it takes to make you drunk, for pot, you need to take around 40,000 times (approximately 120,000 hits) for it to kill you, which is completely impossible.

Pot is so much safer, not only for the people using it, but for the people around them.

I vote keep it illegal. I don't want more 'stoners' driving.
I know I'm the millionth guy to quote you, but I offer peace of mind, not argument. tl;dr warning is in effect.

With that in mind, I'm not going to touch the dead horse that is arguing the effects of cannabis on motor skills; in fact, you're welcome to read my post under the assumption that a stoned driver is every bit as dangerous as a drunk one. What I'd like to focus on is the motivation for driving under the influence. As you probably know through either experience or second-hand knowledge, alcohol causes impairment for a very significant period of time that cannot be shortened, often in excess of several hours, which can lead to quite a dilemma for a person with real-world obligations (job, family, controlling spouse) choosing to drink away from home: tell the world that it has to wait a day because they lacked the foresight to designate a driver... or they'll ask themselves if they're okay to drive. Unfortunately, a lot of people decide that they're maybe-probably-kinda okay enough to make it home, and the result is an inebriated asshole swerving around the road until they stop because they're either parked crooked in their driveway or there's a pedestrian gumming up their axle.

Recreational use of cannabis, on the other hand, has a very, very attractive quality to someone with places to be: you can pretty much come down whenever the hell you want. That's not an exaggeration by any means, as a wide range of mundane activities can intercede almost all of the effects of smoking weed. These activities include walking, eating, drinking, smoking a cigarette, or pretty much any activity that speeds the body's metabolism back up*. I had an experience where I smoked so much weed that I began to lapse into a fever dream-like state. It took about five minutes to pass, after which I stood up for a bit, had some water, smoked a cigarette, and almost immediately afterward, I was hardly high at all**. The long and short of it is, if I need to drive home after smoking weed, I can be sober and road-safe in a matter of minutes (this statement remains true under the assumption that the effects of cannabis are equally dangerous to drivers as alcohol). Not only that, but if one simply decided to wait it out, they'd need only wait two hours at the most (and that's if they were smoking some ridiculous week's-pay-for-a-quarter-ounce cannabis; the cheaper stuff takes even less time).

Because of this, I believe it is reasonable to assume that far fewer people will decide to operate a vehicle stoned than those that choose to drive drunk, simply because it's very, very easy for them to be sobered up before they set foot in their vehicle. Hope that's a load off your mind for when it finally becomes legal.

*[sub]Fun fact: the fact that the longevity of the effects of cannabis are inversely proportional to your metabolism's level of activity is the driving concept behind the "wake and bake": your metabolism is slower when you wake up, therefore, your body metabolizes the cannabis slower and the effects last longer than they would halfway through the day after being in "Drive" for a while.[/sub]

**[sub]Fun fact: people think that stoners lounge around all day because pot saps your energy, but for the most part, they're just trying to prolong the effects by avoiding activities that would diminish it.[/sub]
Thanks for following forum rules and adhering to the 'Don't Be a Jerk' thing.

I agree with your post. Except for your last bit. Unless you mean to say $120 is a weeks salary ( I guess that could be true for some ). For a quarter? Sounds like you might have too many middle men if your being charged more. Or your doing the medicinal thing, living in one of the several states that allow people to abuse the system 'legally'. I don't know what prices are for that...

My post wasn't me worrying over people like you. You sound responsible, and I'd bet you have responsible friends and acquaintances. It's about the other guys I've seen in my life. Should everyone be punished because of these people of questionable mind sets? Probably not. Truth be told, if you are careful, you should be able to stay a step above the law, at least where I'm from anyway. I hear they still come down hard on you in places like Vegas tho...

I still would rather it stay illegal tho. Besides, I have friends who would be out of a job otherwise.

It took me 15 years (I don't partake now) of smoking it to come to this decision. Besides not wanting more people to have access to it, I have learned these other fun facts:

Bong water doesn't taste good.
Mixing weed with tobacco isn't for the feint of heart or lung. Why Germany? Why?!
Joints waste your weed.
Mental addictions are different from physical addictions, but are still addictions regardless.
The Wizard of Oz syncs up with Dark Side of the Moon if you start at the lions roar.
Mental addictions are on a whole different level then physical addictions, hell, one could say I'm completely addicted to videogames and diet soda in that case, but that's so different from being addicted to something like tobacco it's not even funny. If I try to stop videogames I don't have a whole host of insane problems that make me feel like I'm dying for months. (although......)

That's about what my friend makes working part-time. My last job (which I'm not referencing because I lost it ages ago) had me rolling in splendid herb. Prices around here are garbage, though.

It'd put my lifelong buddy out of business, too, but if it meant better product for lower prices from a reliable distributor... hmmmmm. That'd probably hard to get if you were married to your dealer.

So I've heard, but if you shotgun into a half-empty water bottle, the water will taste interesting. But then again, anything that cures cottonmouth is a blessing.

Mixing weed with tobacco isn't for the feint of heart or lung. Why Germany? Why?!
Hahaha, yeah, I'm not a fan of spliffs. Tobacco wasn't meant to be held in.
Joints waste your weed.
I know, but I can't help but waste my weed in the name of acquiring the skill. That, and being able to smoke quietly. The bong isn't, uh, stealthy.
Mental addictions are different from physical addictions, but are still addictions regardless.
Speaking of how I lost my job...

Now this definitely warrants a try.

In my mind it should absolutely be legal, it's a fucking ridiculous hypocrisy to have alcohol and cigarettes legal but something that is far less harmful and far more beneficial illegal.

At the VERY LEAST it should be decriminalized.
