I'm scheduled to have a gastric sleeve operation in 2 months, and I know some have mixed feeling about the whole idea of surgery for weight-loss.

So what are your opinions, for/against?
And please give a reason, especially if you are against it.

(here are some info on the surgery I'm having:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeve_gastrectomy
and here some about the bariatric surgery's in general:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bariatric_surgery )

EDIT: the poll got fucked up as usual.

stop putting maple syrup on the polls, people!

OT: i really dont like the idea, unless you cant move because you're so fat. i prefer the 'go for a run, cut back on the fatty food' techniques.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Well, such surgery can really mess with your body and it means that your reliant on vitamins and such to maintain yourself but in some situations is really the only way to lose weight, with the food we eat nowadays its very easy to put on allot of weight and since we don't need to hunt down food its hard to lose it.

Whilst kinda brusque and more then a little rude this basically.
It doesnt take much effort to eat properly and get exercise.

It'll be far more worth while if you actually put some effort in yourself.

If you're eating until you can't fit any more in, then simply reducing the maximum amount you can fit in is hardly the best way to go about things.

I was trying to come up with a more.... sensitive way to put it. But this. Yes there are genetic traits that make you hefty, but you really have little to blame but yourself for morbid obesity.

Just screws with your body's digestive system. Once the weight is off you won't enjoy having to eat small meals for the rest of your life unless you can somehow get it removed.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with being chubby, as long as you eat nutritious foods and exercise enough. Better to be big and enjoy meals, than skinny and forced onto a diet of nothing more than happy meal portions.

Most of the time, I think it's lazy and dangerous and bad in all ways.

But sometimes, in the case of morbidly obese people who can't easily "just start working out," I think it's fine to use surgery to take off a good portion of it. As long as you then start doing the work required to get down the rest of the way and maintain it.

it really depends, and i dont feel i can give an opinion in your case with little information, but to be honest, i think that doing it the hard way and putting effort into losing weight actually feels more rewarding and it really helps with self confidence :0

If your getting surgery because of a physical health problem, that makes it hard or impossible to lose weight, then im all for it.
But if your doing it just because your to lazy to get of your ass, then grow a pair and stop eating lard.

It's your body, I figure, do whatever the hell you want with it! I wouldn't want one, myself, but if somebody else wants to have one then hey, shoot.

Gastric surgery is rarely a be all end all solution and is not necessarily even a good way to improve overall health. If you are sedentary it will not improve cardiovascular health and may just put an additional strain on the body.

I also hate the way it is used as a "get out of jail free" card. Im gonna grab an example:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/woman-rips-10-year-wait-for-weight-loss-surgery-126446468.html
Saw this in the paper a while ago and while i agree that the wait time is ridiculous, this is a person who has decided im too fat so why try, Ill just get the surgery. Never mind that in her picture she is drinking a bottle of juice loaded with sugar:
http://www.minutemaid.ca/en/products/100_percent_juices/apple_juice_fs.htm compare this to the calories in your next can of pop.
All she wanted was some fad diet to magically make her skinny, and when that didnt happen she just decided to go for surgery
Now as a teen i was obese, i didn't need surgery, eventually i decided to get off my ass, eat right, exercise and turned that obese into chubby in a year, people now call me skinny i stay that way with diet and exercise.

depends honestly

are you happy with yourself? are you too lazy to make that initial plunge?

go for it then, it's your body, feel free to do it.

however, i've put on some weight, but through effort and working out/playing sports like a boss, i've gotten back into amazing shape, so honestly i would prefer you find a hobby and work your ass off at it to lose weight, but whatever floats your boat.

How big are you, dude?

Do you really feel that you're at a point in your life where surgery is THE ONLY option?

I lost 42lb in a year; eat less, move more. If I can do it anyone can!

It's whatever you want. Your body, do what you'd like with it.

There are risks that come with any surgery. Be sure to do plenty of research and know what you're getting into. Personally I wouldn't do it, but I don't have a weight problem and likely never will, so I can't really sympathize. Good luck.

As for those bemoaning its the easy way out, when surgery becomes an option, the individual HAS to show multiple attempts at weight loss, and go thru a meeting with a psychaitrist and join an after surgery support group. After surgery you have to make lifestyle changes or it will come back. Personally I don't understand why in the US more insurances don't pay for it Yes 10-20k is a lot up front, but its cheaper than covering someone for 10+ years with type 2 diabetes, or heart issues.
