What can you guys tell me about blu ray?

I've decided to get a Playstation 3 and I know Blu Ray is a big part of the system. I do have an HDTV but I don't have the HD Service from my digital cable provider.

Do I need some special stuff to hook up my PS3 to put out HD?

What I REALLY wanted to know is if my PS3 ISN'T hooked up to my HDTV but I still wanna watch my Blu Ray movie (which will be The Dark Knight come tuesday). Can I watch Blu Ray movies on a standard television without the HD or will that not work?

I think its good for movies but not the best for games. Longer loading times over better quality, in movies however its best.

I was skeptical at first, but I watched Casino royal with my friend who got it on blu-ray along with the console, and it was pretty amazing. The picture was completely crisp as wel as the sound. I it really blew me away, but I don't know if I think it's worth investing in a 40" screen tv and quality surround just for that

I don't know about the cable or the specific PS3 wires but I know a few things about Blu-Ray

You CAN watch Blu-Ray on a standard TV. However, if you want the BEST picture and sound Blu-Ray has to offer; you need to use the HDMI cable with your HDTV.

Can't you just have some simpler and more practical options in the poll like: It's great, It's alright, I dislike it and so forth.

The only problem I have with Blu Ray is that it is very expensive and I don't have anything that plays Blue Ray at the moment. Though DVD's were also very expensive when they first emerged.

for movies you notice it most with movies that are filmed in hd, some of the older transfers aren't as great in hd and you can kinda tell. so really only get newer movies on blu-ray

as for hdmi cables do NOT buy monster cables, they are a rip off and cost way too much and don't really do a better job than one for cheaper, look on amazon for cheap hdmi cables

Ok, the first mistake I made with my PS3 was not having a HDMI cable from the get-go. The PS£ looks basically like a PS2 without the HDMI cable. I plugged the scart in and said "I paid €400 for this?" Go buy one ASAP.

Blu-Ray (or however it's spelled now) pwns DVD because it can contain fuckloads more data than DVDs ever will.

Which brings me to question why the PS3 has the better games. Simple - The games are on Blu-Ray format.

I was put off the format when Sony ditched the shuttered-cases. It would have made them slightly more expensive to produce, but they would not have suffered from dust & scratches - think 3.5" floppy disk, only larger. Shame.

Blu-Ray is really for 'Home Cinema' and that means for someone who doesn't really want to go to a Multiplex and have popcorn thrown at them and then pop into the toilets and find the smoke alarm has had a empty soda receptacle pushed over it so some youths can smoke dope in the stalls. Then worry about being stabbed on the long cold walk home...

Of course, if you don't want the Director's Commentary and Making of... extras and aren't really a big film collector endlessly re-watching the same films you may have been better off with a rental service. I am about to get Sky+ HD in a couple of weeks, so I have got Iron Man to look forward to - something that I have had to wait since last summer to see... oh, the agony!

I hope my patience is rewarded.

ok what is a shuttered case? if you mean the old cartridge style things pcs back in the early 90s used to use, they were horrid

as for dust, i've never had dust affect ANY dvd/cd disc i've used, finger prints and such on the disc cause more of an issue than dust and scratches only happen if you're really careless with your discs, i have a stack of them next to my tv and no cases and they're fine

Blu-ray stores more data on a disc than DVD does, I'll give you that, but are you seriously saying the PS3 has better games because of a storage medium?

We've got a 32 inch television and surround sound...

I'd just have to figure out how to hook the ps3 up to the television AND the surround sound...

To be brutally honest, Blu-ray is an unnecessary format. Higher picture quality for sure, but you're not going to get the shits watching a DVD because they're not 1080p. Unless you're a feral douche. They're overpriced, the selection is poor and you need to do fucking research before you purchase, to ensure that you're not paying through the nose for an upscaled DVD.

Though if you do get it, grab Corpse Bride.
