I just ordered my PS3 last week, got a nice deal to include blu-ray movies and a game from amazon for free. I'm really hoping that this stuff looks really nice on the TV i got too.
No i don't own a TV or any of the 'next-gen' consols yet. Crossing my fingers that the mail arrives this coming week.

I do like hearing how everyone else is liking their stuff though. Keep it coming.

Someone said something about Corps Bride blu-ray? is it that much better vice regular dvd?

My sentiments exactly.
Just read the opening post. Or are we not doing that anymore? I have no idea why this is a poll, but oh well. Whatever.
My point would be:

I don't see what all the hype is about. HD does the same thing for a lot less money and has a smaller fail rate. And I'm not just talking about in the PS3. Blu-Ray player are pretty poor too unless you know what you're getting.

Now was it so hard to just say that?

Yes, it didn't contain enough sarcasm.

My only problem about blu-ray is that the blu-ray discs cost $30.00 each, but I suppose if you have enough money for a blu-ray in the first place $30.00 probably isn't such a big deal.

The visual and audio difference between BluRay and a good quality standard DVD player with HDMI cables hooked up to a good quality digital TV are barely even noticable. It's not worth the extra money to get BluRay movies and a player. If you want to see the movie in its true full glory, go see it in theaters while it's there. After that, not even BluRay captures the movie theater experience any better than a regular DVD. Unless you want a PS3 to play exclusive games like Little Big Planet, don't bother with it.

I used to work at an electronics store when both BluRay and HDDVD were competing and we sold both. We set up fancy displays with nearly identical highest quality we carried TVs (same brand and model anyway) and a high quality standard DVD player, an HDDVD player and a BluRay player using the same brand of HDMI cables. We set the TV's video settings as the same as we could except for the resolution (as the "HD" ones used higher resolutions). We watched the demo discs that the company reps sent us as well as the few movies that came out on both HDDVD and BluRay for comparison. The HDDVD and BluRay movies looked only slightly better than the standard and you really had to be looking at specific things to notice it. These differences were only barely apparent because we were looking at the same footage (in the case of the movies) side by side on the three screens. If you watched the standard DVD player without the other two running, it still looked great. I was glad I wasn't in the TV department because I couldn't have convinced customers to buy one of those HD players to save my job. I was in the games, music and movies department.

The only real advantage that the HD discs have over standard DVD is storage capacity. Until the movie publishers start truly taking advantage of all that space, the HD movies are nothing more than over-priced copies of the standard ones. They are great for games however since they can hold more data for the processors to crunch resulting in even better graphics than we've seen before.

Lackluster sales of PS3s and their games, however, show that it takes more than pretty graphics and impressive sounding hardware specs to make games that people are willing to buy.

ummm they ARE 1080p at least the ones i own are and my tv reports 1080p when they play. not really sure where you're getting your information from but it's wrong
You think DVDs are 1080p?

Wow... that's just... wow.

I'll give you this opportunity to re-read the post and rescind your snide remark.
no i think BLU-RAY is 1080p, which is what you said in your post with no mention of dvd, you said BLU-RAY, dvd are only capable of showing up to 480p

here's your quote for a second time in my post so YOU can rescind what you said :)

To be brutally honest, Blu-ray is an unnecessary format. Higher picture quality for sure, but you're not going to get the shits watching a DVD because they're not 1080p. Unless you're a feral douche. They're overpriced, the selection is poor and you need to do fucking research before you purchase, to ensure that you're not paying through the nose for an upscaled DVD.

Though if you do get it, grab Corpse Bride.

For games? They're a great idea. Perhaps not a needed one right now, but a very good idea. They provide a ton of storage space that can not otherwise be so easily obtained in any other medium. They will inevitably be a part of the future as games continue to push the boundaries of space limitations. Right now though? HDVD is doing all right, but it's quickly being outpaced. Double layered double sided is going to be the last bastion of DVD data storage and then games will outpace it. Games are getting huge, afterall, and the less disks the less frustration. Making a blu-ray might be expensive now, but in I imagine by the time we start to really need them they'll be a hell of a lot cheaper.

For movies? No, not really. There's just not an appreciable difference and thus not an appreciable incentive to go out and buy a blu-ray player, blu-rays of all your movies, and a TV ready to use all the advantages of blu-ray.

I'll leave my previous post in, this time. Second sentence, 16th word in. Ask your mummy to hold your hand as you read and help you pronounce the big words if they're troubling you.

Seriously though, I do wholeheartedly recommend Corpse Bride. Don't get 300 on Blu-ray, though. Just take my word for it.

You can literally see the film grain and the contrast ratio is so incredible that you can read the details in the shadow areas of the exposure. It's incredible but most people don't know how to tell a good image from a bad image anyways.

Step 1: Take a regular DVD
Step 2: Colour the top of the box Blue
Step 3: Put the disc into $50 upconverting DVD player (which will actually come with HD cables)

Pretty much what Blu-ray is (give or take an audio format).

Should I be ashamed that I still have a VCR and use it just as much as my DVD player?

As for Blu Ray, it's too expensive for me right now, perhaps once it goes down in price a bit...

Go to bestblu-raybuys.com. Its a site thru amazon.com, You can get blu-rays for as low as 5 bucks. I got Indy 4, Transformers, Ironman, The Incredible Hulk, and several others for a total of about 100 bucks US. Some were used, but hey, blu-rays are better suited to be bought used, as they are more scratch resistant, and they are all in great shape, with the original boxes and inserts as well. You just got to watch for deals. Also

I take issue with that. An upscaling dvd player does increase the resolution, but no where near what a true Blu-ray movie has, there is a difference. And you can't beat near lossless sound when you have a full 5.1 channel DTS system. I will say though, that A blu-ray player is really not worth it if you don't have the TV and surround sound for it. A Blu-ray player is also an upscaling dvd player, so your standard DVD's will look even better. The main reason they are so expensive is because of the blue laser, which is still kind of expensive to make, as I understood it. Give it a while and the prices will drop alot.

Also, if you want a good player, this is what I have. Its a really nice player, and the price has dropped almost 200 bucks since it came out. [link]http://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?p=1&id=63[/link]
