Well, this is the stereotype, but I've had 'good' fruitcake (which was still pretty bad.) It was soft and moist, and not quite like the east asian you describe; instead of being topped with fruit, it's got fruit all through it. Some of the fruit was candied, but none of it was hard or anything like that. It just didn't taste good.

EDIT: And I think the batter might have been made with apple sauce...
