A ranger or a rogue, something that can fire volleys of deadly arrows, but still can stand up for itself in close combat.

In RPGs: I tend to be a barbarian/Warrior or any class that can run in, cause a mess and still survive. I don't know why but I find ranged classes boring compared to running in "guns blazing". Though when I played WoW (last two expansions, minus MoP) I enjoyed healing more than tanking or DPSing. DPSing was just dumb fun, while healing had the risk of failure. (which would you have? 1 of 6 healers go down or 1 of 17/18 DPS go down?)

In FPS: I like to play as a spy (TF2) despite sucking at stealth in games (at least against players. I did complete Deus Ex: HR without killing anyone OR being spotted (except for bosses, ofc).

In DnD: I think I'll combine a Rogue/Necromancer, just because the only character I've made that I am somewhat proud of making fits into that archetype, and since he's a villain, I think it would be cool to RP as an evil character.

It really just depends on the game.

It was hard to pick since I usually go from three: Mage, Ranger, and Engineer. The one I choose usually depends on the game and situation as they tend to vary
I ended up picking Wizard because its usually fun to go Gandalf on everyone.

I miss the option of the bard-like person. Some tricks, maybe magic, the colourful one.
Might not be the best in a fight, but can keep morale up around the campfire, during travels and so on, with stories, songs, music and whatever people want bards to do.

Seems to be the one that's usually missing in these polls. Shame.
Because bards are awesome.

I almost universally play mages...

But most often I build them with defensive and utility spells first, and some unusual or adaptable combat spells second. Almost never use the big, flashy elemental kabooms.

Freaky, right?

^This. I voted other, 'cause I'm a Bard.

A wanderer who gathers ancient lore (books, music,... useless trivia, whatever) and can rock out on my 6-string "lute" ;)

I'm a lover, not a fighter. I'd be happy to attack from afar to defend myself and support my friends, but no front-line fighting for me, thanks.

Some sort of mage, wizard-y type. Closely followed by rogue. In Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim, where I had more freedom to choose, I played receptively (first character only) a thief, a sneaky rogue with some extra magic to boot and a stealthy mage. I also like warlocks/necromancers but more flavour-wise, as in having "forbidden powers". I'm not much into summoning, so I'll usually play one when it's mostly a mage with some added nasty spells or similar.

Ranger is my first choice. Bows, dexterity, nature, light melee.

Rogue is a close second because I love playing sneaky thieves.

If we're going d&d I've played them all. My most memorable characters have been honorable barbarians and valiant paladins. I like playing characters with a strong sense of honor, strong not stupid. I enjoy being the most heroic of the heroic. The character who steps in front of the fireball or gives part of his share of the treasure to orphans.

In video games I tend to prefer rogues cuz they always have the most varied and entertaining options for gameplay.

I'd like to think of myself as a ranger, thief or even a wizard but truth is, I'm a barbarian.

At first, I wanted to say the Priest option; healer is typically my favorite in many things..

However, there is one role I would rather play~
I love bard/minstrels/dancers, and such. Mostly buffers and jack-of-all-trades.
The person who isn't very good alone (usually), but makes everyone else better at what they do, as well as can have a flavor of all of the options, a little magic, a little sword, and little healing. I can fill in for people (temporarily) when needed~ I love it!

I don't exactly know what that might say about me. But I love the buffer/healer/rainbows-and friendship type.. ^_^;

Also, they can have the inspiration, power of music, emotion swaying movements and sounds, and everything like that. I just.. Now I need to play a bard in something...
(By the way, I didn't vote, my vote is sort of spread between 3 options)

A Shadow-Priest or Psi-Mage. Hacking things to bits are all well and good, but it's less messy to just fry their minds instead.

I'll be the spindly type in light armour at the back of the party admiring the art and arcitechture of the underground tomb complex we're raiding.

Then, I'll get into an arguement with the paladin about wether the giant spiders are evil abominations or simply mothers trying to protect their young.

I generally play Paladin/Crusader but that is because I rather enjoy role playing a holy knight despite being atheist. I did the same thing in Warmachine by playing Protectorate of Menoth.

I fucking love the ideas of mages and necromancers but I almost always fall back on tank types. If it's a group type game you can bet i'll be the tank of the group.

Even in Skyrim I started off as a mage and ended up being a stealthish/warrior type.

I picked "other" because I tend to go for the unique Mary Sue snowflake classes in games. I guess the standard ones don't do anything for me anymore.

Actually I have a collection of about 10 characters I routinely play in games (more keep getting added all the time) so if I can make a faithful representation of one of them in a game, I'll play that one. They cover all the standard classes, plus more.

But the only classes that really excite me are the ones that can at least self-heal, have a ranged option, and look fabulous. (Picking a class in GW2 was nearly impossible, since every one of them fits that definition, but the mesmer's purple and butterflies pushed it to the front for me in terms of fabulousness.)

Rogues mainly, they're typically my default character, because they're so much fun to play and be all stabby stabby in the shadows. :D

Every so often I will use a Mage to get that elemental mood out of my system. They're just as fun, but I like being sneaky and all that so much better.

I love being able to just jump into a group of enemies and not worry about dying. So I always choose the barb if I have the opportunity.

EDIT: but if I can't be a barb I usually go thief/rogue

When I played WoW I played the classes that were the "purest" in their roles. What I mean by that is

For a Tank I was a Warrior.
For a DPS I played Mage.
and for a Healer I played Priest.

As for which role I like best? Healing, it was definitely the most challenging and fun.

Though for a very long time I played nothing but the Mage archetype

If I can be a Monk, I will. Because martial arts have been the coolest thing ever since I was 6 years old.
Usually though, that option isn't there and I tend to play as a Rogue or atleast someone with melee skills and knows how to steal stuff. I hate leaving a door or lock unopened. It drives my curiosity mad.
