Something has a one in a million chance of happening. Nine hundred and ninety nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine times it doesn't happen, fair enough you think, it's a million to one shot. The one time it does happen 'IT'S A MIRACLE HALLELLUJAH!'. Then with modern day media reporting all these million to ones and people start to think 'this happens all the time, this must be at work!
Imo, just an effect of the brain. We unconsciously try to make sense of everything so really complex stuff or massive/tiny numbers just go straight over our heads, the brain then makes sense the only way it can (it's unlikely to happen just like that so someone must have made it happen!). Also why 'can you explain it?' 'no' 'then it's a miracle' (see: House - pretty much every damn episode for examples of this discussion).
Yes I am aware I just made everything I said pretty much discredited by citing House as an example, which makes no conventional sense. IT MUST BE A MIRACLE!
Stop the planet please, I want to get off now.
