In terms of the poll I think it'll be a nice combination of all three. Bigger countries will have no oil left, so they'll invade smaller ones. After a couple years the smaller ones will basically say "fuck that noise" and bam WWIII.

I'm not intending to troll you but the idea of the U.S economically squeezing any country, let alone China, is laughable.

That would be like Greece economically squeezing Germany.
You do realize that China's entire economy revolves around American consumerism. If the U.S. wanted to, they could sever all ties with China, causing China to literally implode in on itself. To "economically squeeze" China would be an easy thing for the U.S. to do. They are more reliant on us than we're reliant on them, to an appalling degree. It's just that the current situation is more profitable for both sides. The U.S. gets cheap products, and China gets amazing trade deals.

don't think we'll see a war on a global scale the way we did in 1754-1783, 1803-1815, 1914-1918, or 1938-1945. or even a cold war scenario. Globalization is too strong and the developed nations, in general, prefer peace and stabilty (please don't say "but what about america attacking/supporting/destabilizing (X)." i said in general). War is a large cost for relatively small gains. and there isn't really any superpowers so economically/socially/culturally at odds that they would go to war.

Only full scale wars i can reasonably see;
-Sudan v South Sudan, they both have the equipment and the desire, I don't think the UN will keep them seperated much longer.
-The second Korean War, Sooner or later...
-Syrian Civil War, it's gettin' there...
-Israeli-American-Iranian War... this one will be fun[/sarcasm]...

However any or all of them, could have global political effects.

you mean that one war in several different years of school history classes that we spent weeks to months on each time it showed up? yeah i remember that one. Not all schools teach it the same buddy.
I'm glad someone has a school board that gives a shit.

Sorry if i came off as hostile. i sounded like a dick in my post. And yeah my curriculum was pretty good on the things that drove all the wars and stuff.
I went to one of the best public schools in my state which has some of the best public schools in the country and I didn't even learn how important and critical The French and Indian War was for America, among being part of the real first world-wide war, until I took it upon myself to research it for a paper for one of my university courses, so that, among many other things, leaves a bad taste for the American public school system in my mouth. The saddest part? As little attention as I've seen given the French and Indian War, I've barely seen the Seven Years War mentioned.

You mean like what is happening right now in the EU? although we may all be interpreting the term "squeezing" differently...

Nothing other than a world wide catastrophe on a scale never seen or anticipated. The world is far to economically intertwined than before, immigration and the mixing of races is at an all time high, the internet allows information to be passed around at will and exchanged which gives power to the people.

The world is at a stage where we no longer fear a nuclear war or some large nation dominating the world (except China through economics).

A lack of oil will cause a huge rush of buying, they will go of reserves for a while but a world war will not occur.

WATER however, a shortage of it could be a BIG problem, we will see LEDC nations invading or emigrating to MEDC's nations, war will no doubt erupt thorugh claims in arctic regions and lakes.

I have pondered the question over a long period of time, it would take allot to cause the war to end all wars, as that is what it will be.

World War I - Germany gets a mad on.
Well, to be fair, it was more like Serbia got into a tussle with Austria-Hungary, and because Serbia asked big brother Russia to lend it a hand, Austria-Hungary asked Germany to lend a hand. And then Britain went, "A chance to fight Germany?! Right on!" Meanwhile, France got conquered.
Correct except for France being conquered. Austria-Hungary asked Germany to help who took the chance to invade France who asked Britain to declare war on Germany. In 1914 The Western front never got any closer than 40miles to Paris.
Did'nt the UK get involved after Belgium's neutrality was violated? I feel like that was main reason...

I reckon it'll be over food and water. Eventually the population of Country X reaches a point where it can't provide for all its citizens. Someone has the bright idea of taking over someone else's land for their resources. People start taking sides over whether or not it's justifiable. Killing ensues.

I somehow doubt that any of the things mentioned would or could cause a third world war. But you know what I think could? Religion. Now don't get me wrong, the other factors could certainly contribute to it, but I'm fairly certain that one of the 3 major religions will do something exceedingly stupid even by their standards. Then BOOM! Global war. What i think will make it so much worse may be that it would split countries along lines of faith. All it would take for such a thing to happen would be a Islamic terrorist attacking the Vatican.

Maybe after it's all said and done humanity will learn the folly of such superstitious nonsense.

I'm really not trying to hate on religion, but I think this is within the realm of possibility.

When Aliens invade.

I can't imagine another world war with how far the world has come. WIth an international community and the rise of the internet, there would be too much of a push to work together with love and happiness and all that. Countries would be forced to ally and play nice or else be scrutinized by their international peers.

But if Aliens invade, then we fight and there ya go. The next World War.

Hilarious enough, if we don't all die, Albert would probably still be right about the 4th world war.

If China wants its money back from The US (they are in serious debt) that will certainly spike up something...

Ok, we already know your bias.

The Palestinians finally flip and throw the Israeli's from their land ...
And yours...

China will remind the U.S who owns them ...
Ummm, why?

China has a good vested interest in Israel: They provide Israel with cheap labour and Israel provides then with technology as well as securing a friend while they invest in East Africa.

World War I - Germany gets a mad on.
The Great war was instigated by Serbia and Austro-Hungary saw the cassus belli as a chance to annex Serbia which set off the chain of alliances throughout Europe.

Serbia-Austria-Russia-Germany-France-Germany Invades Belgium-Britain.

Meanwhile, Russia and China might very well side with Iran just to have a go at America.
Playing too much CoD.

I'd say food and water scarcity caused by climate change leading to a bit of the ol' ultraviolence neo-colonialism.
Of what economical benefit would that bring?

Empires were unprofitable long before de-colonization took place and it was that fact that was a strong motivator for Europe's empires to cast them off.

Correct except for France being conquered. Austria-Hungary asked Germany to help who took the chance to invade France who asked Britain to declare war on Germany.
Wrong

Britain was the guarantor of Belgian neutrality and it was the invasion through that kingdom that led to their involvement in the war, though Britain had already been warming up to the Entente for years due to the rise of the Imperial German Navy.

Yeah, rather surprisingly, France was on the backfoot for most of the war... pretty much until the third phase from 1420-ish onwards. IMO the Burgundians were idiots...
France dwarfed England both in size and population. It didn't matter how well the English could do in battle, they lacked force to occupy the country.

Besides, being thrown out of France eventually benefited England from freeing it from Continental holdings and thus it being their main focus of attention, to culturally where the progressive loss of the war saw the resurrection of the English language and was no longer in the shadow of the French aristocracy.

Though it's generally regarded that we would of happily igorned the Belgian alliance if we hadn't wanted a chance to attack Germany, since Germany and Britain were major rivals on the world stage.
Belgium was what little they had separating France from Germany. Therise of the German Empire threw British balance of power out the window where the Germanies were the battlefield of Europe where east fought west, now Central Europe was a power that was quick outpacing the elder Great Powers.

The arms race (which gave us the machine gun, the aeroplane, the dreadnought etc) in the early part of the century was really one of the reasons most of Europe was ready and seemingly eager to kill on such an industrial level.
Machine guns were in existence decades before the turn of the century.

Flight wasn't driven by the needs of war until it proved it was capable of actually doing something more than carry a man or two in the air.

The Dreadnought was inevitable as it was a natural combination of fire control, turbines and guns.

Most major powers had Dreadnought-like ships on paper and American and Japan were actively moving towards that end as Satsuma and South Carolina showed (Satsuma would have been first had it not been for a lack of available unified guns which resulted in a mixed battery of heavies; South Carolina lacked turbines).

My bet is North Korea does something insanely stupid and the US and South Koreans invade and take over the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea is contained and is dying out.

The NorKs have several tens of thousands of artillery pieces aimed at Seoul. The city, and thus South Korea (due to the typical centralization around the capital of developing countries) will be wiped out.

No one wants that and top of that, the South Koreans are waking up to the fact that they'll tied to a corpse should unification be realized. That and the usual NorK behaviour are why the recent young adult generation of waking up and cooling off calls for such a thing to take place.

You can do the rest but the Axis would consist of China, Russia, Iran , North Korean resistance, and possible others.
China and Russia are just as much rivals as China is to the United States and that has been the case ever since the 60s.

Ok.

My answer:

If we're going to be nuclear, then it'll arise from Pakistan/India due to the simple fact that India will be forced to launch against both Pakistan and China due to the knowledge that China will launch once they detect East Indian missiles flying.

The time to establish the trajectory of ballistic missiles is longer than ones ability to fire them.

That sets off Russia not knowing where the Chinese missiles are going and launches against them and Europe and American because they know they'll launch once China and Russia do.

Non-nuclear would be the appearance of engineered global pandemics.

I'm guessing that China will ask America to pay up what it owes and then America will throw the most collossal ***** fit the world has ever seen and presto - World War III.
That's not going to happen, simply because China isn't going to "call in" their debt anytime in the foreseeable future. Ignoring the fact that the national debt doesn't work like bank loans in the first place, it simply wouldn't be economically advantageous for China to attempt such a thing. The U.S. is China's single largest trading partner; they're making more money off of the U.S. simply by selling to them than they would by "calling in" the debt. If they did, it would likely result in the collapse of the Chinese economy: they would lose their primary source of national income, and the value of their currency would drop dramatically, because it's pegged to the value of the U.S. dollar.
Huh, that I did not know. At least now I'm a little more knowledgable.

WW1-someone invades Europe.
WW2-someone invades Europe.
WW3-someone invades Europe?

Although I can't see another World War happening at all.
More like someone in Europe invades someone else in Europe, then a bunch of other countries join in because they don't like to see their friends bullied around.

Hm... I bet North Korea would jump at a chance to flex their muscle in a new world war.
.
North Korea will try to launch another nuke but this it it will get off the ground! And fall in their own territory. That would be something I will love to see.
No, they have learned from their mistakes and have come up with a new plan!

They are going to stick a nuke onto a biplanes, give all the three gallons of fuel the nation has, give the pilot a map of New Jersey and tell him to bomb France!
