They got on the wrong side of some people who they really shouldn't have. I'm not entirely certain it relates, but in my mind, the whole Geohotz/Anonymous/Hacker community thing could have been handled better. As for their security, I think nothing is 100% secure, so I can't personally fault them for that.
while impractical there are solutions that are 100% secure
its called "quantum cryptography"

huh.. Encryption science that proves Einstein wrong? Shit, dude, that does sound like the anti-hacker cure.
Sony can afford to try this stuff out with all the money the company makes.
...Well, that is if they don't lose billions on the court case..

Thanks for the interesting read, Spartan!

Just got a 404 error for what would have been the most epic post on here, but now you can forget it. PSN was always laggy as hell for me anyway, for some reason my 360 can play Halo on WIFI when there are computers in use, but when I try to play NHL11 on the PS3 online? Forget it, constantly disconnected from the server.

It was GeoHotz fault.

I've been wondering this too. It's hardly like Sony said hey here's all our information have it.
Actually, this is exactly what happened. The hackers didn't seize Sony's server buildings and take hard drives by force. They asked nicely (in computer protocol terms) and Sony's servers sent them the entire motherlode. Sony has total power over, and responsibility for, what their servers do.

First off, any IP asking for more than one account should have been a red flag. A huge unprecedented spike in account details should've been a bigger red flag.
Second off, no account data should've been given without the user password. Said password should never have been stored, only hashed.
Third off, no server accessible to the outside should have credit card numbers, let alone send them to anyone except the credit card system.

Sony alone is responsible for the security hole in PSN they created. No modded chip, no one special number should have allowed access to millions of users' account details.

And, yes, the hackers should be caught, convicted, and incarcerated for taking advantage of this.
Shit. First the quantum physics thing and now your explanation. However, I think what you said were things more in Sony's grasp.
Man, the more posts I read debating blame or not to blame ultimately result in one thing:
Sony is at fault in some form or another, and deserves the hate and ridicule.

Thanks for this, mate. Brings a whole new view of this situation to me when someone who knows about computers and knows what they're talking about speaks up.

I have recently seen a lot of hate at Sony because of recent events but why? Some scumbag hackers got in. Why is that all Sony's fault? Why are we filing law suits against them? There may be a very good reason for it, but as of now I don't see it. As a PS3 owner I kind of want to know what that is.
Say some scumbag thieves got into Fort Knox and stole a shit ton of gold or money or whatever it is they keep in Fort Knox. Who's to blame? The thieves, sure, but Fort Knox is supposed to be an impenetrable fortress, just like Sony's firewall. You can bet that the owners of that gold or money, like the owners of the PSN credit cards are gonna be pissed off. The result will be a ton of engineers and security personnel would get fired REAL fast if that ever actually did happen in Fort Knox, so why shouldn't Sony take any heat? They shit the bed royally and allowed this to happen.

True but can you really fault them from trying to stop people who are clearly doing something illegal and stealing from them.
Wait, are we talking about the PSN hack, or the stuff that led to that?
I can't explicitly blame Sony for having their network hacked etc. I can say that they handled the GeoHotz modding thing pretty badly... As for stealing from them, I'm firmly of the belief that "You paid for it, you own it, you should be able to do whatever you want with it, so long as it affects you and only you."

Sorry if I missed the point here, I'm severly sleep deprived right now.

I'm too lazy to read everyone elses replies... Sony knew of the attack a few days before the PSN was actually brought down. I think that was around the 16th or 17th of April and the PSN came down on the 20th. They admitted to about 28K credit card information stolen on the initial breakthrough. I read about it on the yahoo.com news page.

EDIT: I'm not saying I blame Sony, just that this is what I read. I havent been paying close attention to details. I'm only really interested in them getting the PSN up.

I can't really blame them their security was as good as any other companies would have been nothings hack proof as anyone should know my only problem was that they didn't immediately tell psn users when they found out about the breac better to get everybody riled up over nothing than to waste the time making sure but I can see why they did it. Add to that the apology we got with the free stuff and 12 month identity protection on them and I think Sony's done all that could be expected of them and more. I think a lot of the hate came from irrational people and fanboys along with the corporations are evil people basically the leeches that feed on blaming others for their own lackings.

MovieBob did a great episode on Sony on his Game Overthinker show

he makes some good points but having been a fan of the overthinker for a couple years, his bias against sony and in favor of nintendo is extremely hard to ignore

While I do agree with the sentiment that PSN users should be more angry with the Hackers than Sony, you cannot let Sony off the hook with this one. Generally, there is supposed to be a level of trust and responsibility whenever you give a company private information. When you give your bank your Social Security number, the bank has a level of responsibility to keep it extra-safe, and to make sure their safe mechanisms work properly.

im worried about the future of the playstation, once this is all resolved. a lot of customers seem to be leaving and the money this is going to cost sony has me worried they may figure its not worth it and cancel their game division. xbox has nothing i want and most of their decent games find their way to the pc anyway. i dont blame sony for this, except for their claim that their system is unhackable. that was just taunting hackers and seems similar to when bush told terrorists to "bring it on." overall, however, i think of sony as a victim
