Wow, I loved it so much I don't even know where to start.
The spaghetti western look, feel, music even the classic sound effects like ricochet of bullets in all the item menus. Man, it was like the unofficial game of The Good The Bad And The Ugly, the Ennio Morricone like soundtrack just had me humming along all the way through, each of the 4 to 5 times I played through it.
I mean the replay value is amazing especially how you can keep all your weapons and money form the first playthrough, just like in Resident Evil 4, you just want to play through again with a harder difficulty. And even as you start to get bored of Red you then get a break and switch to another character, all with a unique skill like dual wield. But Red was always a good central balance of all the other eccentric cast.
The game is a bit short and the levels too but that just kept it going along at a wonderful pace never letting up and always new and eccentric period weapons to give all the more satisfying head shots.
The quick-draw moments were criticised but I loved them, it just made the perfect final bookend to a confrontation and you did have some great opponents, like it was the cream of the crop of all the western exploitation films only the evilness scale turned up to 11. Finally going toe to toe you had to be quick on the draw but not to fast or the gun slips from your grip.
This has to be a perfect game for me, I spent more time on this game than even MGS2 or GTA:VC. I would really want to play through it again but I have played through it so many times and there are so many games I have to play and finish. But a sequel is coming soon so maybe I will go through it one last time. Even if the sequel is exactly the same in gameplay/graphics but has new material then I would still gladly buy it at launch price. Red Dead Revolver really was THAT good for me.
It just has to be the most under-rated PS2/Xbox games ever and anyone who liked any of those spaghetti westerns, especially those more action packed ones like For A Few Dollars More or The Wild Bunch, they should buy, borrow or steal this game... NOW!!
DO IT!!!
PS I'd say GUN is more like a true Hollywood western, much more down to earth than the impressionist and stylised Spaghetti variety that I feel just works perfectly for RDR.
