Poll: What difficulty do you play on, and why?

I always beat the game the first time on normal, that's how the game was designed. The other difficulties are just ratchets up or down from the default.

I start out on normal and raise the difficulty when I feel the need to increase the difficulty...

Depending on the game, I tend to start with hard/heroic and move up from there. The exception is NWN2 where I started on D&D Hardcore, simply due to familiarity with the ruleset.

Whenever i get into a new game, i play it on Normal to get a feel for it. After beating the crap out of it on normal, I play it on the hardest difficulty possible. Very fun to do with DMC games.

It depends on the game really. If I'm new to a game I'll play on normal, once I'm good enough I play on higher difficulties.

I usually start on medium then go to hard, unless it's a genre I have no experience with, then I'll start on easy.

I start on Normal, and move up from there. It allows me to learn for the first playthrough without feeling like a complete loser for choosing Easy.

The only true difficulties are Difficult, and difficult with its limbs removed.

I use the standard difficulty initially and decide after a few levels.

If I find myself dying everywhere, I switch to easy.

If I wipe out everything without blinking, I step up to hard.

definately depends on the game and how good i am at it. i used to be able to play doom 3 on nightmare with only a few snare ups but now i struggle at veteran

but with the Bethesda games that i've played (morrowind , oblivion, fallout 3) i play with the difficulty slider no less than 80% (and if your thining but wait morrowind doesn't have a difficulty slider. you right but GOTY edition does)
