I just play on medium or normal setting first.

If it's a good game, or way too easy, I'll play it again on a harder setting.

I usually do medium because I'd like to finish the game without throwing stuff across the room, but I feel like a puss if I do easy.
Same. I like to have enough of a challenge that I feel good about defeating an enemy, but not so hard that I have to do the same level 19 times in a row (Plane level off of CoD 4) which to me takes the enjoyment out of games.

I want to stretch my legs and work my muscles but I don't wanna snap the controller or punch my monitor, games are supposed to be fun.

I usually test the waters with medium, then switch to easy if I'm getting frustrated. Personally, I don't like games with difficulty levels, anyway: the tendency of most people is doing things the easiest way, and ideally designers would discern the level of difficulty appropriate for most gamers.

Medium for games I own. I often play rentals on easy because I enjoy flying through them. I do enjoy the higher difficulty settings in games like Thief or Splinter Cell, where the nature and objectives of the missions change. It can be like playing an entirely different game, not just one where the evil doers can head-shot at 200 yards.

Hard for me. I see no point in playing "legendary" or "realistic" mode because the damage tends to only be realistic against me.
If by that, you mean: "I shoot you in the head three times, you don't die, you shoot me in the shins, I lose 90% of my health or die".

I seriously know what you mean.
You got it. Nothing shits me more than enemies that can take 4 .50cal rounds to the head and still survive an RPG hit. But I die if I get a pistol shot to the little toe.

Argh!

I play on 'Medium' or 'Normal' difficulty because I think thats what the game is designed to be played on. If the game is good and I feel like a challenge I'll go back and do it at harder difficulties. Normal mode is usually what the developers want you to play on though. The thing with a lot of singleplayer games is that it gets to a point where the game is only harder because your taking more damage and dealing less. Its simply not fun then. I look for challenges in multiplayer, not singleplayer, but some games like CoD4 have made me go back and complete it on the hardest difficulty, just for the sake of it. ;)

if you could actually have a difficulty were enemies killed each other, I would be tempted to use that, just because it would be hilarious. But I normally play through games on Medium first

Generally 'Normal', though I'll pick 'Easy' for games that I know I won't be good at, like Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars (hey, I suck at RTSs).

Usually, it's a toss-up for me between Easy or Medium, depending on the game. For instance, I played Half-Life 2 and its episodes on Easy, since I haven't played many FPSes before, but I'll probably go back & play on Medium later.

Normal to start, then if it seems too easy, hardest difficulty available. Games that make you play through an easier difficukty to unlock the harder one suck though.
