I'm an obsessive freak so I start on the easiest setting play through, up it, play through... until I've played through on every difficulty. Well, for the past 2 years, I swore I wouldn't do that anymore, but what actually happens is that I play through on the hardest difficulty, unlock the "surprise" two difficulty levels, playing through for each, then I go to the easiest and play through the difficulty levels I skipped.

I like a challenge and I feel like I'm getting more out of a game if I beat it on a higher difficulty because it feels like more of an accomplishment. That being said since most games nowadays have as much as 5-6 difficulty levels, I usually choose around level 4 difficulty because I don't like being obliterated just for moving.

i couldnt help but have the saying: go hard or go home : go through my head reading this topic

on a serious note i play mostly on normal.
this has inspired me to try some of my games through again on hard mode just to see how many times i get my own feet fed to me.

the hardest possible mode, cause if im going to be playing video games, might as well go all in, though if that results im me getting my ass handed to me over and over again, ill usually drop down difficulties till i find one that suits me.

I love playing games on the hardest level first. I don't mind dying and I'm not out to finish the game in two days. The longer the game takes me the better and when I do finish a level without dying I feel like a freaking boss.

Depends on Genre, shooters I'll go to second highest first time around and then switch to highest on my 2nd playthrough (if I play through it again) RTS I go normal and work up. Everything I go normal and stay normal, maybe go up one level..

Most games now come with a difficulty setting of some variety, and i've noticed something odd in how people use them. I started thinking about it when I noticed Halo Reach has "The way Halo should be played" (OWTTE) under Heroic. I always set the ability to as well as i think i can do, so it's challenging and a little annoying, but feels awesome when you get through it. My brother sets it to the easiest setting so he can be sure to never lose. Do escapists like their victories challenging, or just handed to them?
I tend to play at the normal difficulty for the first time through. It's gonna be hard enough to learn the game without your opponents being 'suped up. The higher difficulties are for me to test my limits one I've decided whether or not I want to play the game again.

I play a game on the settings recommended by the designers at the onset. From there, should I wish to play the game more, I most often switch it up into a more difficult setting.

I play on hard. If there's an insane or super duper hard I'll play that afterwards.
