I start on medium (easy is for pussies and Devil May Cry), and work my way up the difficulty ladder.

I'll usually play on what the game recommends, usually medium or hard. Will only play a game on a ridic level if playing co op or know game inside out. After watching house mate, play pretty much everything on insane, have no desire to do so. Games are meant to be challenging and fun. Why plan on a super hard level if it sucks the joy out of it?

depends on the game.

Usually, I start with normal

If I have any problems, I'll usually go down to easy

If it's really easy, I'll go up to a harder difficulty

I beat Mass Effect on Insane.. I doubt I could beat Bioshock on the similar difficulty.

I play games to have fun, and crashing uselessly against a wall isn't that fun.

I prefer games that don't have adjustable difficulty sometimes, like GTAIV.

I'm amazed (and glad) there hasn't been any "I play hardcore insane always because the other difficulty levels are for pussies".
You had to say it, didn't you? They started coming out of the woodwork the second you made that post! :p

I do normal to build skills, and eventually I go to pro mode. I never play easy, that's for noobs. What can I say, you know, you are either a pro, or a noob. That's life.

Depends one what game I play, I start on easy if I haven't played the game before, but if its too easy I bump it up to medium. On guitar hero though, I go for expert

I play on easy. I'm not hardcore enough to do anything harder, nor can I be bothered to try any other difficulty.

It really depends on the kind of game you're playing. If it's Arma 2 or Stalker, I'll crank it up as high as it can go -- those games are supposed to be realistic, why not make it as realistic as possible? On the other hand, if it's Half-Life 2 I'm playing, I'll usually play on easy, just so I can experience the story and such without all of those mean zombies attacking me. For the latter games, I'll usually play through them again on hard, if I like the game enough.

Normal, usually, although if I'm confident about my abilities within the game I might switch to Hard, which I tend to do after beating the game anyway.

If it's a new game, first playthrough is the easiest difficulty. However if it's a game I'm familiar with, such as Gears, I'll go higher. After that, I do the highest difficulty.

I usually start on normal, and later switch to hard, because I'm so awesome at everything forever.
Well, not really. I beat RAAM alone on hardcore though, that's an accomplishment isn't it?
Usually normal, I usually play again on hard after.

Normal, unless I'm familiar with the game, i.e. sequels with the same controls. In that case I go the next difficulty up.

I like playing it on medium or normal. It's hard enough usually to give you a challenge and easy enough that you dont die every 10 feet or so. I think if you play on easy you dont get to get the real experience of a game because you just go through everything quickly and simply.

Although there are exceptions to this.
Gears of War is one and i did play that on casual because I just kept dieing all the time and just switched difficulty. :)

Also Ninja Gaiden 2 was an exception to this. :p

RTSs I play either the difficulty right below normal, or normal if it's only 'easiest, normal, escelating scales of hard'.

On everything else I try it one level above normal. I have insecurity issues which I feel the need to compensate.

Usually hard, I dunno why. Most of the time I don't like challenging my brains out but even Fallout 3 I had to jack it to Very Hard mode because not a thing could kill me, even when wearing older armor.

I started Fallout 3 on hard, i didnt even realise it was on hard it was just the setting my friend had let it on.
i didnt really find it that hard, but then again i am a major chicken and tend to run away if at all possible :p
i tried Fallout 3 again on medium and just found it too easy so i just switched it back.

Gh on the other hand is still medium, i just dont have the cordination for that game.
