While reading the threads on America and Japan I was inspired to make this thread about a country people REALLY feel strongly about. That country is none other than the proud island nation of Kiribati.

Love it or hate it it never let it be said that most people aren't quite sure just what in the pikey hell Kiribati is. Is a Kiribati a type of fruit? Maybe a Kiribati is a type of small tree dwelling rodent? Hell, who knows.

So fellow Escapist members feel free to share your opinions on the majestic Republic of Kiribati, it's culture, it's people (both of them), and it's many varied contributions to society . . . like cannibalism . . .and head hunting.

Oh please don't tell me that "How do you feel about [insert country/ nation]" is the new "your last [game related] is now you [insert action]"!

Anyway I never heard of Kiribati until now so I have no real opinion toward that nation.

I am aware it's a nation, but is it the one that's in danger of being underwater in the near future?

"What is a Kiribati?"

I Wikipediaed (work with me, I'm trying to create a new verb) it to find out where is thus. And my reaction to the map was "What is this map showing me?". Thankfully, I quickly managed to find it.

OK, looking at the Wikipedia page, it seems this is the perfect football nation. Enough people for 3-4 teams and the rest would fill up the stadium. And I'll be rooting for the Kiribati swimmers this summer Olympiad - they'll probably just send their postman to face trained professional athletes.

Haha, I thought it sounded like an animal myself. But I guessed it was a country due to the other two threads discussing countries. It should be an animal, preferably one that is small and furry :p

Member of the Commonwealth of nations, strong ties to Australia, uses Australian money, and has a Christmas Island like Australia.

I can't see why anyone would have a strong opinion about the place. Other then it being danger of being under water and Japan building a spaceport there.

I have never heard of it until now. It sounds like a great food name. They have a pretty beach, just looked at it on google.

Absolutely this. I have no opinion on the place. And that puts in perspective how lucky I am to live in Australia. I think I'd be kind of bummed out if I lived in a country people didn't even know about, regardless of their misconceptions about it.

What is an australia? Sounds like an article of clothing. Do you live inside a t-shirt?

My opinion can be summed up as:

"Tell my wife, hello"
All I know is my gut says "maybe"

I knew of Christmas island, but not that it was part of a nation.

Sounds like a type of olive. Extra virgin olive oil made from fresh Kiribati olives.

I was already aware that it was a country but really have no knowledge of its culture and history.

I know it's an island nation somewhere in the Pacific. Other than that, don't know, don't really care.
