Poll: What do you do when you get buyer's remorse for a game you anticipated?

Personally I blame myself. We see it all the time: a new game is hotly anticipated, the fanboys tear every naysayer to shreds leading all the way up until release, when suddenly, said fanboys realise the game they have been so vehemently supporting, is in fact utter shite.

People usually react in one of several ways to this. They will either blame themselves for falling for the Molyneux hype machine yet again. They may continue to defend the game from the naysayers who are actually making valid points. They may tell themselves that perhaps they have yet to 'get into it'. Or perhaps they curse the developers and vow never to buy one of their games again.

The one example I have that has stuck in my mind ever since I made the disastrous mistake, is purchasing Lord of The Rings: Conquest. I'd been following the game for a LONG time, being a hardcore SW: Battlefront fan, I thought there was no way a lotr equivalent could fail. When the demo was released I played it, and loved it, thinking the full game could only improve upon the fun I had in that demo. It was a sure buy for me.

So on the coming release day I travelled to my nearest retailer and purchased the game with my friend who was also buying it (incidentally there was a mixup at the store, in which they managed to give me completely the wrong game inside the case). We were both discussing the negative reviews the game had received, but told ourselves that since we both adored the demo, the game would be worth it, for us at least. Well on that weekend, we soon realised how wrong we were, and how much we both actually hated the game. We had ourselves convinced we still liked it for maybe a couple of days before the remorse set in.

At the end of that ordeal, I only blame myself for being stupid enough to ignore all the warnings and dire reviews, but it still haunts me, that game sat on the floor, taunting me with its £39.99 price tag that I paid every penny of. Never again. NEVER. AGAIN.

If its a console game then the store I usually buy from has a 10 day no fuss returns policy, so you can just return the game if you don't like it... or finish it uberquick.

If I dislike a game due to low production values, then I blame the developers. If I dislike a game which is of good-to-excellent making, but find out it's just not my style, then I blame myself (or rather says it was a chance taken that didn't pay off - moving on).

I miss the option "blame the world" for letting the standard drop to horrible, easy, slow dumped down game.

I tell myself I simply haven't gotten into it THEN blame myself for falling for the hype. (The last game I did this to was Spore)

i've never really felt it cos my bro buys most my games, but if I don't like a game i just assume it'll get better, and it usually does, a little bit, at least.

Your display picture resonates quite well with this comment.
Anyway Brutal Legend. I had myself convinced it was the best game. I mean a metal music themed world GUITARS THAT SET PEOPLE ON FIRE! I still thought it was brilliant till I finished the game and at the end I saw the credits playing and I thought to myself, "That was shit." Anyway I blame the PR team and the demo. Made me think it was some sort of God of War clone with somehow more manlier themes.

I just don't think about it very much and go through the motions...

...until I finish it, then I bash the hell outta it.

Thats roughly what I was gonna say. If the developers can't make a good quality game then it's their fault and only their fault.

Who the hell is gonna admit they defend the game blindly and dish out insults for all those who oppose?

Personally, I complain about it on a forum :p
Seriously, the Conduit did that to me. Just a big let down. After that I sold my Wii as the only games that really blew me away on it were Okami, Res evil 4, and Twilight Princess, all of which are on other consoles.

I take it back if I find out how much shit it is before the next day passes. If it's later than that, I can't turn it in and I'll just get pissed at the game for sucking so much

I get my games really cheap, (supermarkets are great for this) I also wait for a bit for the game to come down, so if a game doesn't live up to its hype, (which I find is most games) I don't really regret it as I got it at bargain basement prices. I also don't really pay attention to hype either, as 9 times out of 10 you will be dissapointed.

Spore... Fucking Will Wright...

Anyway after I played that piece of shit once I trolled the internet looking for sites and gamers that also thought the game was shit. Then I destroyed every single piece of the CD and case and uninstalled it from my computer. I then blamed myself for following the stupid hype but it was mostly because every reviewer thought it was the best thing alive since Ninja Jesus.

Except for Yatzee of course...
But I didn't watch ZP until recently.

I rarely get buyers remorse since I only buy the stuff I'm 99% sure I'll like (I rent the rest). But if I were to find myself in such a position, I'd likely sell the game.

I don't fall for hype, I usually ignore hype completely and know if I'm interested beforehand.

But if I hate a game I buy it sits in my drawer for awhile until I get the urge to try it again, there must have been a reason I bought it and the urge to try again will come back to me.
Blaming the devs.

Good point, I only mentioned it because often i've known people who did that any time someone said bad things about a game that they really regretted getting, simply to defend themselves really. If someone's talking trash about a game you bought, often you take it personally. You're allowed to talk shit about it because it makes you feel better, but if someone else does, it makes you feel all the worse for buying it, so you tend to defend it.
