I like NG+, but it doesn't always work. Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter's new game+ did it best in my opinion. On the subsequent runs through the game, it has new and expanded scenes that you didn't see the first time.

Well, seeing as you said 'RPGs mainly', I'm going to say a huge sword, maybe an axe. Either that or unlock some ungodly magic that sucks the souls of your target out through his arse and feeds it to Cerberus. (Mwahahaha)

Anyway, not like the endings on Oblivion, while getting to the end, it felt sad and empty after you'd completed it.

I've replayed Fallout 3 half a dozen times, and I don't miss the fact that I can't go back without reloading or buying Broken Steel. I find playing after the credits to be boring (DLC excluded) since I'm already powerful enough to topple the big bad, and after that what's the point?

Depends on the story. You're a Baldur's Gate 2 fan obviously, so you know it wouldn't make any sense for the adventures to continue past the Throne of Bhall.

Sometimes a good story requires closure.

If's the rpg in question is of the more Bethesda 'open world' style however then by all means, let me keep messing around after the credits. Not like I really give a damn about the plot anyway, something about some prince and demons or something in Oblivion? Who cares! The real fun is in house decorating, duh, gotta get those bookshelves juuuuuuust right. Meanwhile in Morrowind the story is blah blah something about gods and be being one of em. Grand. Fantastic. Now shuttup and let me continue my work on the ultimate enchanted belt of magical jumping death!

See what I mean? You can't just say 'all rpgs must do this' considering it's all about the story and the world and how the developers want to present it!

Oh it isnt at all a "must", its just a general question of preference. Given the choice, what makes you want to replay a game the most? Going through it once more with all your powers and items, or playing on (or knowing you can play on as many times as you like) after the main story arc is finished, with the possibility of new stories through DLC. Or are neither of these features important to your replaying the game. Youre happy to stop once the main story is finished, and go back to the start, building up your character differently this time, or taking a different route in the story.

Edit: The reason I said "RPG mainly" is because I want you to picture yourself playing a specific RPG you enjoy. In the case of the thread, its about imagining youre playing Mass Effect 2, but any will do really.

I don't paticularly care for most New Game+ because being a super powered badass the entire game gets boring and ruins paceing. I did like what Eternal Sonata did with its Encore mode that made everything harder and unlocked special goodies it actually got me to play it a second time if only for the acheviments.

If I must choose, I'd rather go with a definite ending.

I likes me a good story in a game, and a good story requires closure. Something you can't just brush off and forget about! Again, with Baldur's Gate 2, it had a definite ending in Throne of Bhall, epilogues and tales about the fates of your companions. When you reached that point after dozens, hell, hundreds of hours worth of gameplay you really feel like to accomplished something. You went from a puny little bookworm kid in Candlekeep to the most powerful demigod to have ever walked the lands with characters as powerful as Drizzt and Elminster bowing before you. It's fantastic!

If every game had endings nearly as satisfying I'd be in gaming paradise. So I'll go with that; I want a definitive ending. I want the credits to roll and for me to slump into my chair with a smile on my face, having just enjoyed an experience as good as gaming can give.

Free-form games like Oblivion or Fallout 3 and all them are fine. But you think I'll still be playing them ten years from now? Hell no! The instant a better open-world game comes out they're toast.

A good story however, that lasts forever.
