I think that most badges don't really matter, although some milestone ones like 5000 posts no mod wrath or a a thread with 100,000 views shows that the user is most likely quite a nice person to have a good discussion with. Or a good way of showing off nerdiness in quizzes.
But badges are always a bad thing when you're a hare. I may wear a shirt, but putting on badges with paws is sodding painful work, I'll have you know.

There aren't a lot that I'm insane about, but I would like to get my hands on that Morphius badge...
It's good to see that people don't think that they're a waste of time but I was expecting more people to say that they really like them.

They are quite nice to have once you get them, although Cyber Celeb and Forum Inferno are now getting more common
I really don't care about them. Which is kinda weird, because I'm a total trophy whore normally.
If I get them, I get them. I don't really go out of my way to get as many as I can or anything. I just put my 4 favorites on display. I love the puppy badge, so that's always in the top 4. The first-time caller one is a little rare, and I only commented, once, so I figured I'd show that off. The Publishers Club one is just because I didn't have anything else I like enough to use, and same for whatever my random pick for the 4th one is.
Much like Trophies or achievements, I don't care that much for them. I honestly don't see much of a point. But for some nagging reason I find myself trying to get certain trophies or achievements on WoW or some PS3 games. I never go for the super crazy hard ones like "Beat the game on crushing." I may eventually, though not likely, but I'm no where near one of those that like to 100% things. Though I find them especially useless on here.
