Ford have made a number of hugely iconic cars. The 'Transit' van is an industry standard and has been for a number of years. Both the 'Capri' and 'Cortina' were classic motors, often overlooked unfairly due to their ubiquitous nature. The T Model is hugely important and iconic within the history of manufacturing techniques and consumption patterns. Fords 'Mustang' from an English perspective appears hugely iconic and emblematic of an element of American culture, and the American Ford Pick Up while it doesn't pass UK safety standards so doesn't directly impact on my life is the biggest selling car ever (I think). Finally the Escort Cosworth is a classic example of designers understanding what boy racers want, and implementing it into a number of iconic designs and specs.

I know a few people have said this already, but Aston Martin. They just ooze coolness. Even James Bond agrees.

Well, I've always liked Aston Martins, but they are hardly an example of a 'great' manufacture, they are pretty and perform well, but they are for a niche market and are hardly practical for regular use.

I'm tempted to say Mercedes, because they've really showcased some of the best traits in engineering and manufacturing, from the early breakthroughs when the company started up to the legendary awesome of the gullwing, but I kind of feel let down by them in that I can't actually name a car they've manufactored, without the tuning company AMG completely redesigning the engine, from my lifetime that isn't a poor quality, overpriced example of how clever marketing can sell people crap....

I suppose, like everyone else, I should mention FORD. Not only are they iconic in that they popularized of the automobile and construction line, FORD as a company seems to fulfill the needs of the customer (the ford ute springs to mind). I should also mention toyota, through good quality, relatively low cost cars and, more recently, clever (though imo immoral) marketing have managed to become the most successful automobile manufacturer in the world today.

Ultimately, I'll settle on Volkswagen Group. Yeah, it's a parent company but others have said GM, and the whole beetle thing (even though they look horrible) is iconic, the 4 wheel drive system was popularized by their audi branded rally cars and they just generally seem to produce good quality vehicles.

Best car ever? Hard, but probably the Aston Martin DB9 Vantage...
You presumably mean the DB9 Volante, the vantage is a different car to the DB9, there is also a current era v8 vantage (that is also available in v12).

....And yes, the motivation for correcting that was purely so I had an excuse to look at the photos in the wikipedia articles :p

Well just to be an odd one out, imma say BMW..

Though their really old models look like donkey shit, they are the ones that make cars at this date that look the coolest that most people can afford on average i think..

But if overall coolness from cars of all eras comply, some american muscle car maker would probably take the prize home.. Ford or Chevy maybe..

I'm gonna have to disagree with the TVR thing, as much as it pains me.

Going back to the Cerbera era, they were badly built, unreliable and prone to rusting on any bits that weren't glue or glassfibre. None of them really handle properly apart from the T350C, all erring on the brutish and unwieldy side.

But fuck, they look and sound really really special!
Agreed. I'd say that the brutishness is one of the endearing features of a TVR - in a way, they were Real Men's cars in the wildest sense. Bludgeons as opposed to the scalpel blades of Italy.
I do love a good bludgeoning from a car sometimes!

I'm an engine lover. I won't pick sides. From inside the cabin, the Zonda F is almost impossible to describe in words, they all come out like bluuurghh, eeeek or gaaahhrghhh. Winding open the throttle on my bike makes my heart flutter, and the sound of the 6l Windsor V8 in my Dads Cobra at 5500rpm is earth shakingly brilliant.

I've never understood why so many people either go for muscle, rice or exotics, forsaking the others. Can't we all just get along?!

Volkswagen, the People's Car! They last for life! My dad has a Beetle car that he bought in the '60's that just sits behind his garage now, I think its still there... I remember once he hadn't started it for over a year, then turned the key and it went just fine.

I have had two Golf's and I have loved them both. I hear the GTI is cool too. I just think you can't go wrong with a car thats manufactured in Germany, their manufacturing kicks all kinds of ass.

Porsche a car with an engine that far back shouldn't handle that good.... Don't lift off the gas in a turn in the old ones...

Ceramic breaks, light weight, screaming 6 cylinders, the 911 series is legendary both old and new.

for everyone saying ford as they "started" the modern car industry. Even if ford hadn't been there someone else would have done it within 10 years. Just as its the first doesn't mean its the best.

OT: due to my strong national pride i would love to say aston martin or landrover. But i will have to go with Mercedes Benz or BMW
