Microsoft tried this with the 360 and it led to the RROD and a constant battle for second place as opposed to Nintendo's comfortable seat on top.
I'm sorry what? Nintendo's what?
Nintendo went off and did it's own little thing (motion controls and gameplay>online and grapics) and remained at the very top of the sales charts with basically nothing threatening it. Sony and Microsoft fought it out and Nintendo sat on the sidelines counting it's money.
That truly amazes. I can't remember the last good thing Nintendo released and honestly, I'm pretty sure it was on the gamecube.

I think nothing until it's made, and officially promoted.
This. I never trust rumours on the internet, until we start seeing some official reports on the console, I am without an opinion.

I couldn't possibly care less. I'm not too fond of Nintendo products in any case. Though I do want a 3DS. I haven't had a new portable gaming device in ages, and there's no way I'm getting a PSP.

no offense, but where have you been mate?
if Nintendo did the same thing as Sony and Microsoft (ie. a straight upgrade to the previous console), they would be locked in the same sales war that Sony and Microsoft are in now. Instead, they did their own little thing.
The Wii is at the very top of the sales charts, NOTHING is gonna unseat it until it's taken off the market.

I was purely talking in terms of sales and popularity back there, but as for good things Nintendo has released? Here's a short list of some GREAT Wii titles:
Monster Hunter Tri
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Mario Kart Wii
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Goldeneye Wii
Wii Sports
Zelda Twilight Princess
Animal Crossing: City Folk
Boom Blox
New Super Mario Bros Wii
NBA Jam
Red Steel 2
House of the Dead: OVERKILL
Ghostbusters The Video Game
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Epic Mickey

^^that's all I can come up with off the top of my head. That's the thing about the Wii, if you like the generic, greyish-brown, 3-6 hour FPS/Button Masher, then the Wii isn't really for you.

And if we're talking Nintendo as a whole, then we have the whole DS backlog.
(Just some of the games off the top of my head):
Nintendogs
Mario Kart DS
Grand Theft Auto China Town Wars
Space Invaders Extreme
Zelda Phantom Hourglass
Zelda Spirit Tracks
Pokemon Black/White
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
Yoshi's Island DS
Kirby Canvas Curse
pretty much any Professor Layton
pretty much any Pheonix Wright
New Super Mario Bros

^^again, all I got off the top of my head at the moment

I'm not a lover of all things brown, that's for sure. and I wasn't considering the DS just the Wii, I absolutely love the DS and loads of its games.

When it comes to the Wii...
not a big Mario fan of any kind, nor Zelda. I preferred melee to brawl. Boom Blox? Epic Mickey? seriously? NBA jam? and I don't think you can really count a remake of an old game, brilliant job though they did. House of the Dead and Resident evil fair enough are part of my childhood, and Monster Hunter is brilliant. For me the Wii is so much more miss than hit.

ah, don't be so quick to judge. Under Boom Blox's "kiddy friendly casual" exterior lies a pretty entertaining game with some fun physics. plus the create mode is great fun to mess around in. it's not an AMAZING game (ie. it's not on the same level as, say, Portal), but it's a good example of not judging a book by it's cover.
As for Epic Mickey, any old school Disney/animation fan should and will love this. the camera is a bit dodgey, but it's a classic 3D platformer, a throwback to the days of Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64.
the Wii has a TON of shovelware (PetZ, BratZ, Imagine: Sammich Maker, etc.), but if you look closely, there are some pure gems amongst the crap. Basically, if you're a Nintendo fan, then you'll like the Wii. this new console, whatever it is, should at least be interesting... if Nintendo knows how to do one thing, it's put on a show...

I'm not passing judgement yet but I can tell you this touchscreen BS is most likely fake. I don't think a console could render (presumably four) screens on controllers and HD 3D at the same time for the rumoured 400 dollar price. Or for any reasonable amount of money really.

Sales wise.

Nintendo crushed the other two consistently since launch of the Wii.

When I worked in retail I would sell 10 Wii's for every 360. (I won't even mention PS3's they sold terribly for the most part)

Oh yeah:
OT:
I will watch it, obviously, but I've never been a Nintendo fan, I've never owned a non-hand held Nintendo console and the most I ever did on them at my friends places was play the Smash Brothers games and use the cool SNES cartrige that you could put your GameBoy games in (Pokemon Red on the TV? With options to change the colour scheme?!? OMFG YES!!).

I also agree on the points that it could set a low benchmark, but TBH I don't think Sony or Microsoft are going to try to "just beat" Nintendo, I think they want to blow it away as far as power goes, because really, if Wii could play all the non-exclusives of this gen with no graphical downsides on the little plug in option thing that goes in the bottom of the Wiimote, they'd be even more popular.

I don't really care. It'll be interesting to see what it can do in terms of innovation, but as I do all my gaming on pc I won't be getting it anyway unless it prints money (for me I mean, not for nintendo).

I think this is a pointless discussion since we don't actually know anything about Nintendo's next console.

Now if you want to discuss the possibilities of the rumors, I'm all for that.

Nintendo would be absolutely stupid to not make there next machine HD ready. That was one of the biggest gripes people had about the Wii. Thy would also be stupid to not include better online support. If they're going to make an HD console that will see more mainstream they're going to need online support. This is just my opinion and this is coming from someone who's earliest memories include playing an NES but they would do well to get themselves more of a mainstream or "hardcore" audience.

I'm not going to way in on anything about the controllers, because I have no reason to think that any of it is true.
