It's a good game in the sense that it opens semi-hardcore gaming up to a far broader audience whom might not otherwise play this kind of game. It's also a pretty good sign on things to come in terms of videogame accessibility. I can assure you that if RuneScape required a client download and intrusive patching much like WoW and other popular MMO's of late, it wouldn't be anywhere near as popular. Seeing that a game on the scale of RS in terms of gameplay depth, community and popularity works wonders in a browser it is exciting to think about the ways in which developers will reach out to a more casual audience with a more hardcore experience such as RuneScape.

I used to play it, but I got bored of it after a while. It doesn't really appeal to me anymore.

I used to play it a lot... I was a member for a couple of years I think, but so were all my best friends so I guess that made the whole experience better.

They got rid of the wilderness. They put price caps on items.

God I'm glad I left for WoW all those years ago.
Actually, they put the wilderness back and got rid of trade caps this month.
The damage has been done. They drove away ALOT of players they'll never get back.

But then again, Runescape isn't known to be very good at supporting its players.

I played back in the day. It actually remains the only MMO I've ever played. I remember having fun with it but then I got Xbox live and forgot all about Runescape.

Started when I was 13, still play on occasion.

Love all the quests, and the world in general, just wish it didn't have so much bloody grinding.

I say this as a guy who has all but two skills (Dungeoneering which is really more a minigame, and Construction which I never had the cash to power-level) at 45 or above. Devius, if you want to look me up.

I can't really do all that much due to lack of bank space (members items clogging the system) but I'm kind of glad; it's letting me catch up on the near decade-long backlog of games I missed because I didn't have the equipment to play them. ...that I missed while playing RuneScape.

It's mechanics are essentially very compelling, the game is made so that players coexist in an intradependent cycle, because of the wide arrange of skills and specializations, it enforces that players collaborate and form a social cycle; that creates a community of dedicated players working together, exactly the kind of thing that an MMORPG must run on, unfortunately, this seems to be poorly enforced by the game's updates and community that it all gets lost as 90% of players choose to dedicate to combat as it gives the biggest reward regarding quests and exploration.

The quests are more or less the only redeeming thing I can think of about runescape, for a childish game they're challenging and often expect you to do nothing but explore to find the next clue(or cheat :p).

The controls are bleugh, for something so simplistic you'd think they'd be less terrible.
The levelling/PvE is grindy and easily broken through using specific pathing bugs or just switching world until you have somewhere to yourself.
The gathering is both mind numbingly boring and semi forced to pay attention.
The community is as you'd expect several years less mature than a community for a game aimed at regular aged immature people.
-on the level of somebody following you around shouting that you smell as a method of haggling
-on one occasion killing another player caused that players big brother or whatever to go onto his account and try to intimidate me for making the original player cry and to give back his things, that or that player was immature enough that threatening people as if he was a 15-16 year old big brother seemed like a good idea.
The PvP is 98% not based on the player.
The maps are overcrowded and pretty linear.
The chat is messy and suffers even more in overcrowded areas.

It's a starting step to online gaming and it does a good job at being accessible but just difficult enough to keep some people entertained. The phrase "they don't know any better" comes up quite a lot talking about it, sure some people will stick with it but most will either realise they're not really into games or find something else on the market that will forever make runescape look kinda pathetic in comparison.

This is from my viewpoint of playing it almost 7-8 years ago(when runescape was only moderately outdated) so if anybody disagrees because something I said has significantly changed in that time, I apologise.

Loved it when i was younger, my First MMO. my brother an I were so excited when we were getting membership. I focused on questing, trying to omplete every quest for that cape. I made it all the way to lvl 91, with even an Abyssal whip, which was the second best weapon aside from Barrows. Grand Exchange was awesome, equal trades were not. I also HATED the revenents put in the Wilderness. Those overpowered ghosts which you practically only had the option to run from. Inturrpted my agility training. I got bored with runescape because all i had left to do was grind for skills, which was not fun. I tried to give away my account to someone, then he informed me it was hacked. Maybe it was something i downloaded... I don't care enough to get it back. I have WoW now.

seeing how i tried to give it away near the end of 4th grade, this was about 5-6 years ago.

I actually played it for a while, got up to level 40ish i think? then i gave it to my brother, he got up to level 50ish in everything (this is all free btw) and then he convinced my dad to let him have a few months on the membership in which him and a few friends did that quite often, but it died out after about 5-6 months so i think he ended somewhere around level 60...the account is either deleted or just sitting there, depending on if runescape deletes accounts from idling for so long.

it was fun, especially for a web browser mmo, but there are alot of better games out there (especially graphically and quest wise)

Runescape reminds me of that scenario where a little child is thinking about becoming a docter when he grows up, and then sees someone bleeding really bad for the first time and instantly changes his mind. Before I played Runescape the MMO world of games seemed really cool, but then an hour into Runescape I discovered it wasn't for me.

It was really big when I was in primary school, maybe six/seven years ago now, and everyone was playing it. We had a lot of fun, but only a few people, including myself went on with it. Now though, I could probably name only one kid who plays it, and he has to cop a lot of shit for it. Personally, I went on to WoW for a couple of years, then gave it up. WoW did most things better than Runescape; runes were insanely painful to get for wannabe mages and losing all your gear every time you died sucked, but I certainly never hated the game.

It was my first MMO (many years ago) and I loved it back then.

But it just feels too old when I play it nowadays (graphic and gameplay wise).

Also: inb4 "runescape suks" - you try making a pretty large mmo in a web browser ;)
Basically this. I remember the original Runescape. You know, with the 2d and only one type of attack. Man, I played it all the way through to the new 3d stuff.

Anyway, I really don't know why it's getting such bad rep as a childish game. I used to love it. Still, I think it's worth it to play pay-for-play mmo's and get a better experience.

Runescape has potential to be fun, however it feels like every step you take towards fun, you take 12 steps towards pointless annoying irritation. Running back and forth constantly because your inventory is the size of a peanut is pretty annoying, and as you get better at anything, everything you need for it requires exponentially more travel time to get.

If they stopped trying to drown you in excessive delay for everything, it could be pretty fun. Maybe a membership gets rid of some of that, but I doubt it fixes anything.

Haha, I used to have discussions about the complexity of pokemon in High school in the hallways with a friend.

I used to play Runescape, don't anymore though. It's great though, if you're looking just for a no-hassle social gaming experience.

And the players there are very easy to troll, lol.

Never played it, I saw it running a couple times long ago, looks like shit. Don't think I'll be trying it out anytime soon ever. Isn't it about the oldest possible browser based mmo you can play nowdays?

It had great quests when I played. I expect it still does, as that's the only real thing going for it. The game is just one big grind and it's really annoying. Makes it hard to get into, although it still keeps its position as "Baby's first MMO".
