I think it will encourage post - whoring.

A valid concern, but I've seen the mods bring down the uru hammer of ban for people they think are doing that.

Even though I mentioned mr cheeze of having the highest post count, I remember him/ her saying that it was due to them posting on the Warcry forums, and not The Escapist. So, technically, mr cheeze has no time superiority here... I believe it's Cheeze Pavilion (sp?) (sorry, I don't know who it is. Could someone please correct me if I'm wrong about who's the oldest?).

I was actually referring to the Dairy Gazebo himself. I don't actually know who Mr Cheeze is.

On another BBS I used to frequent, after a certain point, you could pick your own designation, which was fun.

That's a fairly common feature on forums. In my experience, it's more unsual when your member title isn't customisable.

I haven't really had a problem on other forums with the post counter. Only on one forum, really.
Anyway, I like the post count feature. It shows those who have been around for long periods of time (and kind of gives them more respect, I suppose), but it doesn't really discriminate against the new users.

I think it's just there because a lot of people just expect it to be there, but honestly, I don't care about it. I don't think it really means much at all.

I've heard this argument before many times. There's a number of good things that can come from a post count; rather than e-peen; which have already been shown here.

It tells the Purple Rains from the "ohmygodfirstpost" crowd

Other than the fact that that distinction is quite uncomfortably hierarchical.
