I just let my mind wander.

I either think about other types of media I like set to the right tone (Johnny Cash goes very well with Berserk for example), or I just imagine shit up, like stories, characters, concepts, whatever.

There's a lot of angsty answers in this poll. I listen to music while either browsing the internet, reading or occasionally playing video games where the sound of the game doesn't matter to me, such as while doing my dailies in an MMO.

I don't like listening to music while doing something (work, exercise, etc.), I always felt that it was a tad distracting to do that. Although when I was younger I would play music over a videogame (instead of the game's ost) but I haven't done that in a long time.

I commute a lot these days and I would love to listen to music while on the bus, but I don't own a decent pair of headphones (nor have the spare cash to get one).

So yeah, when I do listen to music, it's usually while doing... nothing, really.

If the question was "What do you do while doing just about anything?" then the answer would be "listening to music". More commonly I guess... would be when working, cleaning or travelling somewhere.

I've found out that I'm one of those weird people that enjoys the melody of the music while listening to music, read the words on the page when reading a book and watches the scenes when viewing movies/shows.
I know it sounds quite obvious but time and again I notice how some people (most of those I've met actually) tend to only do things haphazardly or not really being in the moment when performing certain actions.
The most glaring of those times having to do with music and movies/shows.
Gaming and reading more or less demands a tighter focus but I've known people who do other things then as well.

If I put on some music I want to listen to the music, that's why I put on the music in the first place.

Listening to music, I'll be doing one of the following.

2. Cleaning
3. Performing
4. Practicing for performing

While I 'can' listen to music while working, but I choose not to, it can be a distraction, and there is nothing worse that losing track of a thought process because of an external influence. I know lots of dev's that can, but not me. if I'm not knee-deep in code that I might listen to something, it depends on the level of concentration required.

I listen to music when I've got housework, again it's a distraction thing, but in the other way this time. I don't want to think about what I'm doing, it's mundane.

Sometimes I'll have to choose a song to perform to, s If I have enough time, which I never do, I'll try to edit something together, and then there are the hours of practice... I often end up hating the song afterwards....

Hey, where's the "All of the above" option? I don't drink, but I would have picked it had it been there. Eh, I'll just go with browsing the Internet.

Unless I'm listening to something where I have to follow dialogue, I'm listening to music.

I'm gonna throw my hat down on the 'listen to music for musics sake' side of the ring. Just love it when I can sit down with a really good album on and listen to the melody, beat, rhythms and lyrics of amazing songs. That's why I really hate it when I've put an album on and someone'll come in and start singing over it or along with it. No. If I'd wanted to hear you sing this song I'd ask you to sing it. Nobody talks over movies or T.V. shows, so why do they over music, dammit.

I don't use it as a form of escapism (harr harr) because I don't really want to escape anything. I use it to listen to something, well, nice.

I do it a lot when browsing the Internet, so that's my option.

Where is the "all of the above" option?
I clicked "Browsing the Internet" just because that's what I normally do, but all the other options apply as well.

I aswell request a 'all of the above' button.
Happens rarely that I'm not listening to music, I just simply cannot do without.

I can't concentrate on anything complex with music on. So all the things I do while music is on are routine, 'Already know how it works, just need to write it up.' style tasks, games that are mostly about visual spatial skills, or things where I'm worried and don't want to think for a bit.

Pretty much either on the internet (not all the time) and going and away from work or I'm just walking (shopping etc).

I almost always have the radio on in my car any time I drive. I'll also listen to music via the Internet every now and then, but not too often as my computer is crap and sometimes doesn't like me doing several things at once.

Drawing, 3D Modeling, Animation, Digital Painting, Writing, or Gathering inspiration. That pretty much sums up my use of music though I occasionally fall asleep to it.

EDIT: One thing I never use music during is working out as it is distracting and hurts my ears no matter how quiet my earbuds or headphones are.

I didn't pick an option, because it doesn't have an "everything" option to it. I listen to music about 50 per cent of the time I'm awake (if not more), and I use it for anything, sometimes simply listening to music, sometimes to concentrate, sometimes because I wanted to listen to music while doing something else, and so on. Even when I'm not listening to music, I tend to hum or even sing (if I'm alone), so I can't really pick just one of these options :/

Can't there be an 'all of the above'? Music isn't just singular thing, like reading a book or watching a movie. I play Warhammer 40k, so I listen to music while I paint. I workout, and I listen to music then. My drive to work is 30mins long, so you guessed it, music!
When I go to sleep, I put something on. Why I shower, music.

Basically silence creeps me out.
