the first rayman I havnt plaed, as I understand its one of those more obscure underated games, its 2d sidescroller

the 2nd rayman (well its called rayman2) I think is the first 3d one, its actually really really good game both in story and visual style+ atmosphere (especially considereing some games failed when making the transition to 3d) if you can deal with the out dated graphics its worth a look as an old school platformer

I never finished it however there may be others

I dont know anything about rayman 3, how ever i get the impression its more "funny"? I dont know, rayman two was charming and somwhat sober in tone
It wasn't really meant to be "funny". There are a few things in there which make you smile but other than that it was mostly exploring many different worlds which was actually really great to explore. What was also good is that they mixed it up so it isn't mashing the 'punch' button.

There are often times when the objective isn't to punch but rather get your timing right, there are teleportation skating levels, flying and rail shooting levels and each boss is unique in their own ways
sounds cool, like I said I know nothing about rayman 3, and so if they changed the tone of the series or not

rayman two actually got kinda creepy in some parts (especially the "cave of bad dreams") and you only have to go there because youre dumbass freind ate somthing bad and has a tummy-ache so you know, risk youre life to get the "exilar of life"

that said it owuld make more sense if he was terminally ill, I cant remember

In my experience, it's usually somewhere around atmosphere and immersion. This can be from may different sources, including visual design, story, music, etc. It's just something about the feel of a game that really does it for me. Some of my favourite games:

Phoenix Wright series, Ape Escape, Halo: CE, Grandia, SW:KoToR, Mercenaries, Tombi 2, Borderlands, Metroid Prime. These games all managed to really pull me in, and give me some kind of emotion either during gameplay or afterwards, but usually both. It's possible for me to thoroughly appreciate a game's design but not think a huge amount of the game (Portal, Civilization, Total War series.)

Of course if the controls or graphics are distractingly bad, I will lose touch with the game, and a game doesn't need a great atmosphere for me to love it (Puzzle Quest) but something about those games I listed up there just really makes them stick in my memory with positive emotions. I may have forgotten some.
