There's no shortage of games out there that lack innovation or are just tired re-hashes of previous iterations. Some are quite obviously cash grabs by the developers and publishers, others are just victims of ineffective development cycles.

So which genre/style of video game has taken it too far:

Is it the sci-fi or fantasy RPG with the same old, boring lore and story (ex. elves & dwarves; good vs evil, end of the world plot line)?

How about the modern day FPS that looks and plays like its 20 predecessors?

Maybe it's the sports series churning out annual versions that do little to innovate the genre?

Perhaps the sub-par game whose only purpose is to market that platform's motion sensor capabilities?

Or is it something else entirely?

Before you decide to potentially post a "if you don't like it, no one is forcing you to buy it" response, this is a purely subjective thread. You know what they say about opinions and assholes...

EDIT: Third poll option is messed up, it should say Modern day 'brown' FPS

Now, I voted Motion Sensor games but I'm going to clarify that here...

I'm sick of SHITTY motion sensor games. I don't know if it's the medium, developers can't figure it out, or if you really can't have a "true" game with motion sensor but it feels like we have a handful of good games drowning in a sea of mini games and shit.

Double clarify...I'll just go ahead and say Shitty games. Every one of your items up there can be good if done right.

I'm tired of seeing FPS/TPS games . They are all so similar . A little originality can't hurt , can it? And i don't mean any big innovation . Just do something , anything different . Like dark void and the jet packs . Hell i'd even settle for CoD advance warfare ... In space!

Action games masquerading as rpgs. Mindless/linear/arcady FPS/TPS...
That. Certainly that. It isn't an RPG because you put a leveling system in it.

I'm gonna have to say Fantasy RPG's. Skyrim has the beautiful open world and freedom, Amalur has the fantastic combat system, but not many others are innovative or even fun for that matter, choosing instead to repeat the same generic towns with the same cardboard NPC's and the same terrible combat system.

I am so sick of elves I could throw something. They're in everything!

High Fantasy is so overworked, it should file for damages.

I personally loved COD:4 and to a lesser extent WAW, but all developers constantly rehashing the same FPS every year should really just take a step back for a few years and come back with a batch of amazing titles.

Love how everyone complains about the "modern day" (if you asked this last decade people would reply WWII) while Fantasy RPG is officially the most overused genre.

One is a fad, the other has existed since the beginning of gaming.

I put modern day but for me it's "near future" games. I get the appeal, you can include modern settings, architecture, ideals, weaponry, vehicles etc where you wish while inserting whatever applied phlebotinum you desire and changing things if you feel special. Even so it's just annoying. There are so many of them and they're all so cliché and obvious and dull, dull, dull.

Fantasy annoys me, primarily because of how limited it has become. Seriously, there is SO much range in fantasy, it's literally whatever you can imagine it to be, instead it's dwarves live under mountains and are good with technology, elves like woods and are magical (and probably effeminate) and humans are middle ground and like stone and steel. Orcs are evil and likely green.

Just...mix it up, you have thousands of years of mythology and writing to draw inspiration from if you can't imagine your own world, use it, abuse it, make it weep. Just please stop thinking that Tolkein (much as I like his writings) is the be all and end all.

None, because I don't need to buy them? This is like me complaining there's too much rain in Scotland when I live in Essex.

Unless of course that genre is directly limiting your favourite genre, such as MMS's vs fast paced FPS, or action based RPGs crippling isometric turn based RPGs. In which case *steps aside* have at it. But I have a feeling people are mostly going to qq about games and genres they don't even play, like MMS's when they only play RPGs, or 'anime games' when they only play very western games.

Oh, and MMS is Modern Military Shooter, in case you didn't know and were confused.

I'm actually going to say I'm just sick of seeing old school RPG's/any RPG before 2005 ALL being held as the pinnacles of gaming and god's jizz. I don't want to hear about how much you loved Baldurs Gate, or how crap Pokemon has gotten after the one that came out when you were 6, or even how Interplay's Fallout was better than sex, with the NEW fallouts being massive piles of shit. I'm basically talking about games that require you to know a book load of info to play them, manage hundreds of items and calculate complex division before you can attack anyone. Now everything is shit because it's a bit less needlessly complicated. Now, feel free to attack me and call me a retard and insult my mother because I don't like RPG's that are as complicated and hard to use as a jet.

I said other, because I didn't now that the third option was modern day FPS which is what I would have picked otherwise. Anyway, FPS, I'm tired of them.

hard to use...as a jet?

but...jets are awesome... o_O

I understand what you mean, but most rpg's do streamlining in the wrong way, it should be an easy game to pick up with a hard game to master, but most of them just make it too simplified to the point it's not an rpg, or they try to mask it with a couple rpg elements and it's an action and/or adventure game besides that. I'm not saying the old time rpg's are superior, it's just there really hasn't been a modern day counterpart for em

OT: either the over emphasis on making bland shooter (i'm fine with shooters, but when you make a shooter just to have it as a shooter to appeal to a wider audience, then i'll probably sigh and pass on your game.) or as mentioned, overly simplifying RPG's into making them accessible for a 5 year old is getting a tad bit overdone.
