I had the game on PS3 so the mod isn't really applicable for me personally, but it was a godsend to a friend who was dreading going through a PC playthrough precisely because of the Fade. The funny thing is, faffing about in the unreality of the Fade could be an interesting concept with some gameplay tweaking, but how they ever thought that that maze garbage was the best way to portray it is beyond me. Also couldn't you already be a female city Elf?
I think the issue with the Fade wasn't in concept but that it simply outstayed its welcome. It was about 30-60 minutes of playing through a predetermined sequence with few of the choices, strategic elements or party interactions that characterised the entire rest of the game. The Fade itself is a cool concept, how it ties into demons, blood magic, magi and normal folks but forcing the player into a sequence where their warrior/rogue skills, party, gear etc mean nothing and then dragging it so long was a greater problem. Maybe if it were 10-15mins max it would've gone down easier?

Female city elf of course was always available; any origin and gender was valid. The mod removes the race & class restrictions (mostly Magi was affected) to allow female city elf mage for example, instead of only warrior or rogue before. Without the mod, to be a mage one *had* to do the Circle of Magi origin and dwarves couldn't be magi at all (granted, this is a lore based, role-playing reason). Obviously some strange things could be done too without the race restrictions. For example one could play the commoner dwarf origin as a human mage or the dalish elf origin as a warrior dwarf.

As for Skyrim, haven't played it for a while but I do love the game (even if the civil war is criminally underplayed). I don't go for all that fancypants and untrustworthy magic, I sneak about and cut throats as an Argonian, with enough skill in light armour and healing potions to go toe-to-toe when I feel like it (killing animations are a joy to behold!).
Oh, vanilla magic really isn't great as it was, particularly destruction. There were some great druid themed mods and some "rebalancing" ones (tho I modded some values myself) to make destruction worthwhile. The issue here was always that an archer, backstab or often just a frontal power attack could usually one-hit most things without leaving stamina depleted, whilst destruction would take 5 minutes and leave one out of magicka just to kill a flying bug. I removed restrictions from werewolf entirely to make it a valid gameplay choice too.

I did stealth my first two playthrus, though I could never get the hang of proper backstabbing/insta-kills or use Shadow Warrior perk effectively. There is a strange satisfaction to be had from mauling things as a werewolf (enough to offset the frustration of always reverting back naked).

Do Skyrim.

Why? Because you'll either hate the game and quit after the first hour or absolutely love it. Its rare to see a different reaction other than those two.

And if you hate it, go play Dragon Age: Origins.

Of the three, I've only played Skyrim. I recommend it for sheer size and volume of content. I put about 100 hours into one character, started an opposite-skillset character and put in another 100 hours of almost completely different content. I recommend modding the UI, the default is (ahem) not very good.

Heard great things about Dragon Age and The Witcher. They're both in my queue.
