My choices are based off two things, which model looks better and if I'm playing as myself. Seeing how I'm female and the women in games almost always look better than the men (and I'm not even gay) I usually play female. Sometimes I'll still switch it up just to do something different though.

Really? I found Mark Meer's delivery about as exciting as someone reading a phonebook. (But to each thier own I guess)

OT: I switch between if it changes character interactions, or there are multipul ways the game can end. (Like in fallout 3. My male char. was so good angels would fly out his ass, while my female char. was gunning for the Throne of Hell.)
Im not gonna say Meer is the best VA out there, however as Shepard I find he has a certain charm, and he doesnt over exaggerate all his lines like Jennifer Hale

Almost always male. Occasionally I play as a female, but only after I've played through the game as a male.

Male playing Male... Male as a female is just sorta creepy, way I see it.

Remember the old MMO word play!

I pick either of them (i'm a male). Generally i pick females more then males since they usually look better than the guys who just look uglier. But if a male character has a good character model i usually pick them.

I picked a female 3 times (all the classes) in Dragon Age 2 because a female just felt right to pick in that game.

male playing female I like some eye candy also in MMO,s male players are more generous to female avatars. (for those wondering I,m not one of them)

that,s kinda odd since caring roles are usually attributed to females.

Female playing female,

especially in Bioware RPG's, femshep (I cannot describe how much I dislike that nickname) and a female Grey Warden are for more intersting that their maile counterparts (IMO)

Usually, I'll go as my own gender (female), but sometimes I'll go as a guy (Fable 2, Pokemon SoulSilver, etc.).

But healers are usually spiritual leaders, priests, etc in MMORPGS and most RL priests are dudes.

Man here. And I'll do both.

Wait, that sounded wrong...

Ok, yeah, given the choice, I'd rather play a female. And yeah, I'll spend extra time in the character creation screen making them look hot (unless thats not possible - this means YOU, Dark Souls!) Is it because I'm shallow? Yes. Yes, thats part of it. Thats exactly why in Saints Row 3 I created a hot anime chick with massive wabs who hated clothes.

But from a non-shallow standpoint, female characters (usually) get better dialogue options. And in the case of FemShep (no offence to Mark Meer) far far superior voice acting.

But my main reason is that in a first playthrough, I tend to be the goody two shoes, while in my second playthrough I can go all out and be a total arsehole. Which is why my second playthrough is as a male character. Because men are arseholes.

Eh, I'll switch from time to time. Although I have a preference for females when they're voiced, e.g. Mass Effect/DA2.
How do you avoid Low Content Posts when someone else says exactly what you were going to say, where a quote will fully suffice?

Nothing at all, quote them and ramble afterwards (like this) or type it all out again for yourself?

As a gentleman,

In offline RPGs, I find myself partaking in the role of a fellow gentleman with utmost frequency, say, 99% of the time. In fact, I have not done otherwise yet, but Mass Effect with the ever so talented Jennifer Hale has tempted me many a time.

In online RPGs, I am a gentleman more often than not, say, 80% of the time.

I might suppose that this phenomenon has something to do with my desire to immerse myself in the worlds I temporarily inhabit. Assuming a gender so unfamiliar to my person would naturally prohibit maximum immersion.

captcha: how quaint.

Oh dear, if I heard that idiotic excuse being used seriously one more time...

Someone seriously used that on me... for their Skyrim character -_-

Depends on the game or the character, really. It's about 50/50 either which I choose.

For instance, most of my characters in Skyrim have been male Khajiits. I just like the way they're designed, and they look splendid in whatever you throw them in. What's not to like? Plus, it's fun stickin' it to the Nords...

"Skyrim belongs 2 teh Nerds!"

"Oh, hai! I'm that dragonborn-feller of yours! Check it out! Fus ro Dah!"

In WoW, however, it's female tauren plate-class all the way. They just look great in plate. *Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!* For the Alliance, it's female worgen clothie. They're too thin and spindly to be anything but the scheeming priest behind the tank.

Again, really depends on the look of the game. Although if you do get better treatment as a lass in an MMO, I certainly haven't noticed it...

Male, playing as females. When given the option to make a character, I tend to try an hit demographics that I won't otherwise see. Except New Vegas. I seem to only build male characters there for some reason.

Unfortunately, Mario only comes in one gender. Though I suppose if I played other RPGs, I'd probably want to switch it up. I generally favor male characters and character designs, though. Also I'm female.

Male as Male. I guess I do that usually is because it makes the game more immersive and also fun playing as myself.

Playing myself may sound douchey but It's fun to play me in a Fallout/Oblivion/Etc setting.

Well I'm astonishingly shallow so I'm Male plays as Female, especially in Mass Effect and DA2. I'm sure he's a nice bloke, but Mark Meer (ME) always sounds like he's reading off cue cards and I never feel like he's really happy to be there. Jennifer Hale's voice always sounds like she's more invested, some of the speeches sound really passionate and the flirting and banter always has a great playful tone to it. IN DAII, Nicholas Boulton (Man!Hawke) isn't bad, but Jo Wyatt sounds so cheeky and feels more into it.

For games with no voice, I'm pretty changable and just go with whichever one looks the coolest. If that's the hulking Barbarian with a loin cloth, battle axe and shoulder pads then that's what I'll do. If its the sexy Elf lady in the chainmail bikini, then guess what :)
