I'm a male and my two best friends are female (one is my wife). My non-wife friend and I have known each other since highschool, we went to university together, and we worked together for a few years. What that resulted in is that there is no line between us anymore, there is very little that we don't know about each other, and very little we could say or do that could offend on another. She's also the reason that I met my wife, in a kind of roundabout way. Way back in university I asked this girl on a date and she assumed that, as I was always with my best friend, that I was dating her and that I was now trying to cheat on her. The girl then told me off and ran to tell my best friend what had transpired. After she realized her mistake she bought me dinner to apologize and we hit it off and now we are married with two kids. Aside from those two, however, all my other close friends are male.

I never found it weird that I had female friends and, other than that one time I just mentioned, I have never had anyone assume that my friend and I are a couple, but that is probably mostly because we live in such a small town that everyone knows everyone and they know that we're just friends.

Well, besides skipping the joke about "having too many [best] friends", the one friend I do call my "best friend" is the same sex as me: Male

However, he is a Mexican/Chinese "redneck" trapped in a Caucasian body while I'm just a stereotypical white guy trapped in a "strange" black guy's body (despite having an African, Canadian, and German heritage from my mom's side alone), so we could basically be an alternate duo of Miami Vice given our overall chemistry between us... We've been friends since kindergarten and, even when we both moved shorty after the first year of middle school (one of the worse years of our public school lives for similar, yet different years), we still end up attending the same second middle school and high school...

We both had the same female friend (who was one grade younger than the both of us) in high school, however there was a small rumor going around that both her and I were secretly dating outside of school... which was completely false... even though we both knew where we both lived yet never bothered to go there in the first place... (Other than that, I don't really have any "female" friends to truly hang out with...)

Honestly, even if you do have someone you're actually dating, I'm hoping you guys are at least friends... But, that's just me living a probable fantasy... But then again, who says just because both you and your friend look like you're dating does mean that it's even true to begin with? ...I know I would never jump to that conclusion until I end up seeing some natural PDA business going on...

Male and one of my bestest best of besty best friends, is female.
We plan on going to the same college, create cartoons together, and just overall have each others backs until we both find our soul mates. I'd take a bullet for her and she'd do the same for me, thats how it'll stay and I'm absolutely loving the strong relationship we have for each other.

Many people assume we're a thing, it does get annoying but we just shrug it off. She's currently doing great going out with this new guy and me single and happy (YES IT'S GODDAMN POSSIBLE!), but having to explain that to people when we hang out is where our "complex" relationship tends to confuse people...
For some reason male and female friendship=CLEARLY THEY F*** AND NOTHING ELSE.

So no I don't think opposite gender friends is weird. Such a damn shame people still think it isn't possible. Hmmph >:T

My best friend is my boyfriend, so yeah. Don't really find anything weird about that.

Other than he's my only friend. :[

Because sex... and sex?

OT: If I were to include my GF, she'd be one but I also have a good friend who's male

So both... Not at the same time, but separate

Well, if my girlfriend counts, then I guess my answers are 'Female' and 'No', in that order.

First question, yes, he is a male.
Second question, no, I have no problem with that. Sometimes I think that it would be great to have one so I would not be so introverted towards the other gender.

The closest thing to that though is my best friend's little sister.
So it isn't all that bad ... still trying to get over my introverted-ness. D:

Well the longest lasting best friend I have is male, known him since I was 8 or 9. Other best friend is a girl I met at 13.

Though neither really talks to me much anymore so maybe I need to find some new ones.

I've had two major friendships with my own gender (female). I'm introverted, so I prefer small groups. I was also "weird" so no one really wanted to be my friend.

Both those friendships ended... poorly.

My best friend(s) now are male, and my friendships with males always seem to last longer. My previous friendship with a male ended because we got to grade 4 or 5 (hazy memory) and I guess he got the "ew girls" virus that was going around and we stopped hanging out.

My best friend and I are like Turk and JD. Except we're both white, and neither of us are bald.

We've known eachother since we were like 5. Infact, he's on the escapist.

I don't have a best friend but I'm pretty sure when that happens, it's going to be a girl.

Just would better suit my comfort level. I imagine lots of affection between BFFs. Hugs and laughter and messing around. I'm not the most touchy feely person as it is. But it just seems wrong for two people of...

We'll say compatible sexual orientations to be all up on each other and for them to claim it's not going anywhere. That it's simply platonic. I wouldn't come straight out and say "bullshit."

But I'll be wearing my cynical and skeptical glasses.

I am male. My best friend is genetically female, though her biology isn't "standard issue" anymore, if you know what I mean. She loves to run around and play with me, and is quite the little slut despite her physical condition... though I would never dream of indulging her beyond playful petting and silly games; It's much more fun for us just to sit together on the couch and snooze or share a snack. She's starting to show her age a bit, but she's still a lovely girl as she's always been. She always gets compliments when I show off pictures of her in a new body harness or leash, like this one:

...What? of course she's my dog. What did you think it was?

DISCLAIMER: This isn't actually my dog, it's a picture from Google. But he looks a lot like her.

I'm male and my best friend is indeed a male. I certainly find nothing wrong or awkward about people having good friends of the opposite sex. Not every relationship between sexes has to be sexual or romantic, after all.

I'm not sure if I can point to a particular "best friend", in all honesty.
I have a few really-really close friends of both genders. It feels rather arbitrary to pick one of them. Besides, most of the time we hang out all together :)
Friendship monogamy is an odd concept.

In reality my girlfriend fits the role, but for the sake of discussion my best friend would be a male, although I would declare a female as '2nd best'. However, neither is located in my immediate proximity and while the friendship has been stable for years and isn't going anywhere due to lack of direct contact, it is infrequent that I spend time with either.

Actually, I don't spend much time with anyone outside of work/school and my girlfriend, nor am I bothered by that, oh well.

In any case, in regards to the female friend it is most definitely a case of most people imagining / expecting us to hook up (at least prior to my dating a different girl). But generally it was never a problem, anyone who has actually spent time with the two of us (as my girlfriend has) knows that their's nothing sexual going on there.

Male here. My best friend is a male to female transsexual who was considering surgery and hormonal treatments for a time but has since decided to continue living as a male for convenience reasons.

Try fitting that into your poll. :p

I find it interesting that the majority of females who's answered so far have had male best friends. I wouldn't expect that.
