The only things I cannot do well with my left hand is write, swing a sword, or fire a gun, while I can do those things with my left I'm not very good at it, my right hand being far more efficient at those actions.

True enough, however, out of of those, using the mouse, eating and picking things up, boxing, possibly the guitar. All the others you technically use both hands i.e. the bat and controller.

Actually, I never really thought about it...but do controllers count as right or left handed?
The majority as standard seem to always have the d-pad or movement analogue stick on the left side, and the action buttons and look analogue stick on the right, does that make most controllers left handed or right? (Although of course they -are- both technically since you can't very well only use one side or the other ^^')

And as for the mice, a lot of people seem to learn the opposite then what their handedness is, mostly left handers since a lot of mice are right handed. Though there are mice that are neither, the single button mouse for the Mac comes to mind.
not always there's a dominant side

also your one hand, cept possibly guitar and to a certain extent typing, doesn't have the fine motor control something like writing or drawing or painting does. try painting a miniature with your opposite hand

1 what hand do you write with
2 get someone to throw a ball at you and stop it from hitting you
3 stand in front of a table and try and pick up an object off it
How does no.3 work? I don't get how picking up something tells you your handedness, will a person not be able to pick up something with whatever hand is weakest?

But no.1 is usually sufficient, whatever hand you primarily write with.
No.2 is a bit iffy too, as there are people who catch catch thrown objects quite well regardless of handedness.
#3 works because when if an object is placed in front of you and equal distant between left and right you will always reach for the object with your dominant hand, you have to consciously switch hands to your off hand

it has nothing to do with the strength of the arm or hand

#2 is the way you block things, yes i catch with my left and throw with my right HOWEVER if i'm putting up my "holy shit" helmet my right goes up first

i could add a 4 to that and say "throw a baseball or tennis ball" your dominant hand will throw it fluidly like a pitcher would and your off hand will as the saying goes throw like a girl
Ahh, okay.
Back to No.3 again then, sorry, I'm finding this interesting ^^' But, I'm wondering, would that work only when you are observing someone else? I mean, if I were testing this myself, let's say standing at my desk, ordinarily I'd reach with whatever hand is closest to the object I wish to pick up, although I am left handed, so I often do find myself leaning over to say flick the switch on the back of my speakers, even though the switch itself is to the right of me and would actually be easier to flick with my right hand (I would also use less energy than if I were to lean over). But, being aware of testing my own self for handedness, I would find myself inclined to do the opposite simply because I have the knowledge of doing some form of test.

Been reading up on ambidexterity some more, it's apparently possible to train yourself to be ambidextrous. I'd imagine that would take a while though and a lot of practice, still, it seems like a useful skill to have.

I'm mainly a righty. In my youngererer years, when I played Junior Baseball, I hit on both sides, but I will still a righty. Funny thing though. I use the mouse wih my right hand, and I type in a hunt and peck style, it means I use primarily only my index fingers; basically, if I was to type with both hands, I would type very very fast. I type fast enough though, I'm in maybe the top 60% of typers, speed-wise. But I use both hands for that. But so does everybody. So this information is useless. I just took two minutes of your life away. MWAHAHAHA!

yes you had to think about using the other hand to fool the test HOWEVER if you do that, you will notice your dominant hand will twitch and you stall for a second or two before using your other hand

yes you can train yourself to do things with both hands however it takes a lot of training to do certain things, such as writing, drawing, painting and playing a guitar, the last one is odd but plucking the strings takes a lot of motor control. tho you can do that it's actually not that good for you to do so, it takes a lot of brain processing time

take boxing for a instance, you can do both normal and southpaw but most boxing coaches will say the same thing "pick one side and stick with it for X years and then switch" and usually the X is a big number

Right-handed mainly, but I tend to play arcade consoles lefty for some odd reason. Dexterity on the left isn't too bad... I suppose I could probably train up to something approaching ambidexterity if forced to.

I didn't read all the posts, so forgive me if I say something someone else has already said.

I write left handed, and I use a fork left handed, but other than that I do everything right handed. So "technically" I'm left handed. I learned how to play baseball right handed (meaning i throw right handed, catching with your left hand doesn't make you ambidextrous), I kick a soccer ball/football with my right foot, throw a frisbee right handed, use a mouse right handed, play guitar right handed and so on and so forth.

And I have heard some weird stories and legends about left handed people. I've heard that schools used to force students to write right handed. I've heard that in old countries they used to think lefties were some kind of witch and would hang them. Some of the stories are unblievable. Me personally, I like doing things a little differently.

I do get kind of annoyed sometimes when people who've known me all my life, suddenly say when they see me write something "Hey I didn't know you were left handed". It's not the unusual if you ask me.

And although technically someone has just as much of a chance of being left handed as right, I'm one of 3 people in my entire family, and as far as I know family history, that is left handed. Strange.

this is true, it was back up till the later part of the 20th century they would force you to write with your right hand if you were left handed. i write with my ring and middle finger, instead of index and middle, when i was in school they tried to force me to write with the "correct" fingers, the only thing it taught me was to write both ways

and yes in the olden days lefties would be accused of witchcraft

most ppl aren't left handed, so yes it's unusual

it's genetic as well i do believe so not surprising you have a few ppl in your family who are left handed

I'm a righty... but I'm not so bad with my left. I mean, playing violin, and gaming, has shown me that I'm alright with my left. Just don't get me to write with my left hand...

True ambidextrousity (is that a word?) is incredibly rare. I refuse to believe over 13% of you do not favor one hand over the other. Being able to catch a ball or write your name with your off-hand does not make you ambidextrous.

I'm right-handed. So are most of you. Deal with it. :p

Ambidextrous!!!
no you aren't, unless you can do EVERYTHING you can with your left and right, you are one handed

i'm thinking that they poll should be "what hand do you write with?" cause a lot of ppl are thinking that because they game, type and eat with both hands they are ambidextrous and that's not true, cause i'm right handed and i can do all those things but i'm certainly not ambidextrous

Righty forever because I can't do shit with my left hand other than typing and gaming (except guitar hero, stupid lefty fingers are so damn slow). Even the strength is uneven. My left is like 1/3 as strong as my right.

Aww...the lefties were ahead when this topic was made, guess the '90% of the world' righties are going to win out heh.

I think for question 3 it will be the one you do on reflex, without thinking about it.

I am the same as slaygore. I'm also more toned and bulky on my right, though maybe that's because I play tennis

I voted for right, seeing as I feel technically right-handed now. I used to be left-handed when I started Primary School but I was actually forced to write with my right hand. From then, I was scared shitless of being seen writing with my left hand for some reason. I can't even remember or UNDERSTAND the logic behind making me write right-handed but now I can barely write with my left hand (I still can but don't feel the need to). I don't consider myself ambidextrous for this reason, despite doing a lot of things with my left hand. Perhaps this is bizarre reasoning but to me, I write right-handed, therefore I am right-handed.

I make sense, you just have to sift through it.
