Mainly I snipe for the ridiculous kills you can get from halfway across the map, although in saying that in COD you can sit with a pistol and most of the time make the shot with it.

oh god, try and play some reach slayer online, EVERY FUCKING TIME people only pick swat and snipers when its available, which basically turns into a campfest of who can headshot who the fastest. i dont mind playing it once every 3-4 games but literally every fucking time people vote for it, it gets annoying as balls (i usually get 1st or second so im not getting owned by it but i just hate having to play it all the time)
True I hate swat and snipers on reach, so fucking annoying.

well in the cod4 competative teams of 5v5 the sniper was the main kill getter since they could kill anyone on the field at anytime. also it requires the most skill on the pc due to the flick shots and quick scopes required to be a high level sniper. honestly i wasnt a sniper myself in these games but i found it much easier to go shotgun destroy whatever then take up the sniper and make my team lose.

snipers are also easy to kill in pub games unless the sniper in question is very good but usually they arnt and therefore easy to kill with a quick flank on the SMG's.

for anyother game i cant say because in 2142 they were fucking useless since people could be revived no matter what

i agree that, ideally, snipers should be limited to 1 or 2 players per team, depending on the size of said team... other then that, the damage should never be higher then headshot oneshot and body shot 2-3shot kills.
personally, i just really like sniping. i dont care if that makes me pro or not...it's challenging to do it right, especially in games where it's very inaccurate like the AWP in counterstrike. It is annoying as hell when everybody snipes, but 1 or 2 of them can spice up the game enormously

I like it with games like Halo when snipers are powerful, but are useless outside of their comfort zone.

I really hate MW2 snipers though.

MAG snipers are annoying as well

I love it when people try to do sniper matches, because it means they aren't watching their backs, and I get to do a couple of quick little assassinations when I flank around behind them.

Seriously, there's nothing sweeter than shooting a sniper in the back of the head (except maybe doing it repeatedly because the sniper keeps coming back to the same spot).
for some reason they keep coming back instead of constantly changing position....

sniper vs sniper isn't sniping, its just whack-a-mole where the moles shoot back. true sniping is someone waiting for a few minuets to get the guy on the MG turret +200m away.

in my eyes snipers=support

I hate the mentality more than anything else, its really bad in MW2 where apparently you can't even look down the scope to be considered a good sniper, no you have to "quick-scope" which leaves players that actively try to set up good positions and snipe (i.e. me) ridiculed for having the gall to try and use a sniper rifle like a sniper rifle. That and I just feel bored when I snipe except when I'm playing BC2 or when I'm actively trying to hide and snipe on CoD.

It depends on what game they play tbh.

Snipers in some sort of CO-OP game mode, like in Ghost Recon or the Spec Ops portion of MW2 is fun.

One of the first games of Ghost Recon 2 I played was on the absolutely huge green forest map, at night. With like 4 players on each side, acting like a squad. Everyone was keeping as quiet as possible, just trying to find a good spot. Once we found a spot, two of my team moved to the north to watch our backs and we were looking west over a small open patch near the road and a village. Sure enough, after a few minutes of waiting, the enemy team came in looking for a spot. Noticed only two were snipers so we took them out quickly and then took out the Riflemen.

Relocated and waited for the same outcome only one of our Snipers got killed by one of the snipers.

Loved that game...

Because my teammates are usually a bunch of (insert any and all curse words here they all work). Sniper rifles GENERALLY work if only headshots are one-hit kills.
I agree though battleship happens to piss me off and yeah only people who use snipers should get them.

Sniper vs sniper can be whack-a-mole, but it can also be an intense wait for the other dude to show himself. Depends on the gamea and the players.

I totally agree with you on snipers being support. They are meant to soften up key enemy targets for everyone else, not for a solo camping fest. Snipers should not go soloing, unless they are, well solo. Pretty much 90% of snipers in games should be reminded of this.

It would focus on getting a comfortable position so your character doesn't shift around, holding still, bullet drop and the whole nine yards, rather than just being a tacked on gun in an FPS for people with above-average reflexes like they are in Halo.
What sniping is all about in real life.... it's all about "One shot, one kill" and nothing else. Sniping isn't about hiding in one location and taking out an entire army (unless if what you're sniping is an explosive near the enemy)

and as far as I'm concerned, Armor doesn't really help much. Yay for semi-realism!

As far as its concerned for games, whatever.... i'll just stay away from those types of sore losers. they probably won't provide me with the challenge I desire

One gametype me and a friend did at lot (in halo2) was invisible sniper (permanently invisible, always have sniper on the map everywhere) so its a game of hide-n-seek so you need to find clever hiding spots, observation, and accuracy.

It once took a bit of effort and skill to use a sniper rifle effectively, it no longer does but the mentality of 'im a sniper, hear me roar' has stayed.

Playing Halo CE online, I could say that 50% of all servers are sniper only no shield games. "no shield" meaning you don't have a shield so headshots as well as body shots can kill in one hit.

I can't be the only guy to notice this. The sniper is fought over in lots of online games, people would hang back and take pot shots with a one hit kill weapon in a safe zone rather than engage the enemy with teamwork. Why is this? Who decided that the highest level of play makes Sniper Rifles the best weapon? I hate good snipers as much as the next guy but I don't think the weapon should be banned. No that's too much, I just hate it when EVERYONE is sniping each other and the game becomes battleship. With nobody daring to go closer and into the open and using one hit kill weapons from far, like a pair of battleships at sea.
yeah its quite annoying, wish their was more vanilla servers. :(

Sniping factors into teamwork pretty well.

If you've got a guy trained on the enemy, it means that their plans get ruined because they can't get any people out their to do anything. All snipers can get very boring very quickly, but one or two in a game is good. Others snipers provide heated challenge to your snipers.

its quite funny how much easier quick scoping is on the console then on the pc
