Hello,

So my friends here we talk about best FPS franchise. what do you think is the best FPS franchise in history?

For me

1. Half life: Both Half life games are 2 greatest Shooter ever made. they were unique, innovative and ahead of times when released in 1998 and 2004. the level design, the pacing is unbelievable. Half life 1 was first FPS game that focus on Story but without interrupting to cutscenes.

2. Deus Ex: Not a primilary FPS series but FPS/RPG and its to me is best franchise ever in history. from story to science fiction cyberpunk universe to level design original deus ex was ahead of its time and HR was also very very good. cant wait for mankind divided. sure it has one bad game that is invisible wars but it didnot even hurt franchise at all.

3. Doom: This is the game that invented FPS genre. once upon a time FPS games were called Doom clones. there has never been a bad Doom game. and all 4 games in each era revolutionize FPS genre. this is how FPS should be made. fast paced non stop shooter with complex level design.

honorable mention goes to Stalker but its one game with 2 expansion pack. not really franchise at all.

Original Crysis and FEAR were among the best FPS ever but its sequel ruined its legacy.

so whats your fav FPS franchise?

If I had to go by the sheer amount of entertainment I got out of it, then Half-Life wins by a wide margin. The games themselves are a good time in their own right, but it was all the mods I put most of my hours in. Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, The Firearms, Earth Defense Force, Natural Selection, Action Half-Life and a bunch of singleplayer stuff like They Hunger.

Second place would be a near tie between Quake and Unreal for their multiplayer, with Quake having a slight advantage because it's where Team Fortress originates and I adore me some TF.

Only if you choose to ignore games like Marathon or System Shock. Granted, the latter did have a short opening and ending cutscene[footnote]And let's be honest, the Half-Life tram ride and ending sequence with g-man are essentially exposition dump in-engine cutscenes that let your look around and maybe move a little. You didn't 'play' them so much as you were just along for the ride, sometimes literally.[/footnote], but other than that both told their stories ingame, uninterrupted, several years before Half-Life did.

I'm going to vote for OG Doom. I played that game a ridiculous amount in the early 90's, and I've not played any fps since that has grabbed me anything like it did.

Doom because no shooter has ever been able to top Doom II.

System Shock 1 was so groundbreaking for its time, especially when you consider it came out before Doom II.

Not Half-Life. Its a great series, but to say best "FPS" suggests something else. Its a great game that plays like an FPS, but the focus is the puzzles, world, and story.

Best FPS should be a game where the gunplay is great and the focus on shooting things in first person. Don't know what my answer is, but it irks me how often Half-Life series gets credited as a great "FPS".

Halo. All around excellent gameplay for both singleplayer and multiplayer. Absolutely massive universe, and the story taken by itself isn't half bad either. I would have preferrred it to end at Reach, but Halo 5 still made up for 4.

As far as franchises go, I'll give honorable mention to Battlefield, Doom, Killzone, Medal of Honour, and maybe Half-Life.

Probably the Unreal Tournament series. I wasted spent sooo many hours playing those games.

That's also the reason why I was able to pick up and run with Overwatch so easily. Because it's the same style of fast-paced, twitch-trigger action.

It's too tough to say because there is the classic era and modern; both of which have arguably the best of the genre. I like HL, Doom, STALKER, Crysis, Killzone, all for different reasons. They each do something better than any other.

Then use a source port like ZDoom or GZDoom. I haven't played vanilla Doom since 2003.

Indeed, besides, even if vanilla Doom had mouse support, you'd still only get mouselook along a single axis because of the way the original Doom engine works.

True, which is why I exclusively play GZDoom these days.

Doom 2016 can never be as good as Doom II because the modding support is so lacking. I have played thousands of hours of Doom/Doom II because the modding tools that were later developed for it were so easy to use and they were so versatile. There are hundreds of map packs out there that are superior to the original levels.

With Doom 2016 you have SnapMap, and from what I have seen it is terrible. It's like Timesplitters 2's level editor... you can't even have outdoor environments. Whaaaaat?

....What? It used mouse...a little too much. Moving with mouse is an insane idea.

Are you sure? Cause every version of DOOM I have ever played has used the mouse. Wolfenstein, DOOMs predecessor did the same, where you move and shoot with mouse, and its a pretty shitty control system. When was the last time you played this version of DOOM? Cause Ive never heard of it or seen it.

Are you using those as two distinct terms, or are you just alluding to some hitherto unmentioned third term combining both? 'Cause 'best' is a very nebulous idea when discussing art/entertainment.

In the interpretive spirit of the OP I clicked Half-Life on the poll, but I'll cite Halo here as a personal favourite I've played more than any other FPS series. From solo, co-op, and MP, I reckon that series excelled in every area. I may've tapped out at Halo 5, but the main trilogy plus ODST (arguably my favourite in the series) were remarkable games, and there's been nothing quite like it since.

You're both right.

Vanilla Doom's default controls used the arrow keys for moving forward/backward and turning/aiming, and ctrl for firing. Enabling mouse & keyboard mode turned the control scheme into what you remember, essentially just replacing the arrow keys/ctrl with the mouse

I would say BioShock. BioShock and Infinite are two of my favorite shooters of all time, and I would probably even say that they are my two favorite shooters of all time. Infinite took a little longer to grow on me, but that had to do with playing it on the wrong platform (I much prefer playing it on PC than 360) and taking longer to really appreciate the story. BioShock was mind-blowing from the start, and I'm still surprised at the new ways I find to play the game and new elements of the story I've missed. Granted both of those have been diminishing over the years, but I've also played the game more times than I'm willing to admit. Anyways, even BioShock 2, easily the worst game of the series, is still a decent FPS. I won't praise it for much and don't plan on replaying it, but I at least enjoyed what I got out of it.

So... it's still a FPS. I'm not sure why it matters what it focuses on.
Another vote for Half-Life.

Its like saying a hamburger is the best salad cause it had lettuce in it. I think you could remake the Half-Life games and remove the FPS part and still have a good game.
