Call of Duty is now pretty much the biggest franchise out there, though it really, really took off with the 4th installment, the original Modern Warfare.
Some people believe that since then, however, the series has been declining, and continues to sell more through the reputation gained from past successes (especially considering the most recent and rather lackluster release).

So I put it to you, Escapists, what is, in your opinion, the best Call of Duty game since 4?

(I am aware that some of you may prefer Call of Duty 1, 2, 3 or some other CoD release, however that is not the question I'm asking here :p)

(and no, there is also no option for "I don't like CoD"; you don't like it, don't vote)

Well, considering I have only played COD 2 and 4, and I have no intention of playing the other iterations, I would have to say that 4 was the best. It had many great moments, but it was not so over-the-top as to be unbelievable, unlike the other installments (at least from what I have heard).

I find them all to be average shooters, except CoD 4, which was actually a pretty awesome game. I'm also of the opinion that Infinity Ward does it better than Treyarch.

Activision is the publisher bro.

COD4, for sure.

Honestly, it's still the one me and my buddies have the most fun on, when we can find a decent non-hacked lobby.

Where the hell is the option for Call of Duty 2?
RECENT. RECENT. Let's face it. This console generation is really fucking long.

I go with WaW.

Loved me some campaign co-op, some campaign, some MP, and some zombies. Even loved the hardest, cheapest, most bullshit Veteran mode ever.

How far would you consider recent? Because Modern Warfare has aged considerably.

Activision doesn't make any of the games, but they publish all of them.

It's like saying that Disney is better than Pixar when Pixar makes the movies FOR Disney.

CoD 2, but that's not on here so I'll have to go for CoD4. Granted, I haven't played Blops yet, but the opinion from some friends is generally bad.

I think you're thinking of Infinity Ward.

Personally? Recent for me is 2-3 years. So, only MW2 and Black Ops could be in the poll, for me.

The TC is starting this poll using the one that started that massive success seen today, by providing the core MP features still used to this day, CoD4, as his dividing point. Which is honestly a decent choice as a divider.

You mean Infinity Ward?

I'll go with COD4 as well. It was my first real Xbox Live game, and I have fond memories of playing it with my friends. I prefer Treyarch over Infinity though, really didn't like MW2, and Blops would be fine if not for the horrible connection issues.

Activision publishes all the Call of Duty games (or at least all the recent ones), it's basically the big company that hands cash to the developers and tells them to go nuts. You're thinking of the developers, who are Infinity Ward for Modern Warfare 1 & 2 and Treyarch for those other ones that, well, we tolerate.

Essentially I agree with you, just a little mix up with the companies. Also you made me think of Infinity Ward and now I want to cry again.

I've been playing since the first. United Offensive was the best hands down. (My favorite campaign was the British campaign. Especially the mission where you worked with the Dutch Resistance.) It was made before the series became bloated by consoles, and had a bunch of features which have either been striped and forgotten. The vehicles were balanced, the weapons made each side different, and the maps were solid. They even had some destructible environments. Grey Matter>Infinity Ward and Treyarch

As for the ones included on this poll, I found World at War to be the best of them. It was a good throw back to a time when Call of Duty was about lots of different factions working together towards a common goal where you played a regular soldier rather than the super soldiers they cast you as today.

The Russian campaign was especially solid, and I also found the American one enjoyable as well. I thought the Russian campaign did an interesting take on morality with your character's actions being reflected in a comrade's diary. You didn't know you were being judged, for instance, when you chose the fate of the German soldiers you captured. There was nothing lost or gained by your decision. The only thing you could do was to chose to become a monster or act with restraint.

It combined most of the best parts of the old Call of Duty with the good parts about Call of Duty 4. I only wish they had balanced the weapons a little better, made tanks easier to kill with rockets, and restricted weapons to factions. The way they let any side use any weapon now makes the multiplayer matches feel like mercenary death matches.
