What exactly qualifies as a "story revolved game"?

Most games these days involve a story of some kind. Hell, even stuff like Halo has a story. Not necessarily a good one, but it's there.

Christ, so does Gears.

Alan Wake for me.
Being a writer myself, it seemed to strike home a little more than most.

EDIT: This is from recently played games~

Games with their focal point being the story. A game like Heavy Rain where you don't actually do very much gameplay but te story elements make it excellent. Or Persona (I only played 3) which is such a well loved game because of the way Atlus incorparated such excellent social elements when speaking with NPC's and other min characters. The story also had a lot of twists and turns.

Halo and Gears are played for the gameplay not the story.

I'm a bit suprised no-one mentioned Deus Ex yet. The story itsself is quite obvious but there is also tons of background information to obtain by reading a newspaper or a piece of a book that elaborates more about the story of the game and is easy to miss.

Metal Gear Solid it's practically all story.
no, no, you're confusing 'story' with 'cutscene'. XD

Yeh it does have an insanely intricate plot, which I do enjoy, tho intricate doesn't exactly mean the same as good.

OT: I know it's not the best story driven game ever, but I enjoyed Red Dead Redemption's story more than any other story driven game in the last five years, easily.

Top 5 have to be:
#1 God Of War the first one played out like a greek tragedy.
#2 Valkyria Chronicles it was the first game in a long time that I cared about characters
#3 Diablo3 + Expansion the game itself was just a chase till you kill the three but the cut scenes and the back story were excellent.
#4 Warcraft 3 + Expansion I thought the different factions all going at it was great its too bad wow killed it for me
#5 Killzone it was the classic rag tag group of warriors goes rogue and brings home the bacon.
I actually reckon you're right about the first God of War. So much attention was given to the awesome fighting and gory killing that little to no respect was given to the plot. And you are right, it play out exactly like a greek tradgedy.
Think about it. If God of War was erased from existence and someone told you the story of Kratos, you would totally believe it was a classic greek tale.

As for the others on your list, I've never played anyof them except for Killzone. I think you're mistaking 'classic' for 'cliche'. Doesn't mean it's not damn good fun tho ^^

The Darkness. Nuff said. I've said it a million times. NO ONE PLAYS THE DARKNESS D:
I played it. Thought it was great, despite being utterly dour and depressing.

OT:

Enslaved has a fantastic story and it's amazingly acted. But nothing beats Mass Effect.

Not finished yet, but I'm going to say Dragon Age... Mind you, that probably fits more comfortably under best characterizations or best presentation (aged graphics aside.) Still, I've not stayed with it this long because of the combat mechanics.

Heavy Rain takes a close second followed by Mass Effect and Uncharted 2 on equal 3rd.

Planescape Torment. It's a story with a D&D game tacked on, and it's awesome.

It's also one of the few RPGs you can solve with barely any combat. Three unavoidable fights and two kills, if I remember correctly. Both kills are minor side characters. One's a zombie.

Shouldn't the gameplay and story go hand in hand? Otherwise, why not watch a movie?

As for the question, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time stands out to me, though I also have to include MGS 3, despite the whole cutscene thing. I would also nominate Portal, though you may differ in your thoughts on how much of a story it has.

Bioshock and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Yes, I liked the story behind it.
I preferred the story in Underground, but American Wasteland wasn't bad either.
