I think the opinion of the average Escapist on MMOs can probably be summed up as "MMO ARE ONLY GRIND LOL" before they go back to leveling their bowstring skill up to 50 on Skyrim or whatever.
I lol'd. I don't read the Escapist for MMO coverage, because to be honest what little coverage there is is pretty bad. Same could be said for the forums, despite the TES games being essentially single player MMOs.
Anyway, I like MMOs and have certainly spent more time on them than on single player games in the last 3 or 4 years. For world building and exploration, they kick the ass of any single player game you can mention, and it's only a grind if you let it become a grind, or if you're trying to rush to the level cap as quickly as possible. I've played...
City of Heroes - more time on this than any of the others, though I only dip into it ocassionally these days. No interest whatsoever in the endgame content that's been recently introduced.
Fallen Earth - probably my favourite, and certainly the game I go back to most often. Still nowhere near the level cap.
Lord of the Rings Online - much better than I expected it to be and not at all a tacky movie tie-in. The world building is exceptional, and I'd say if you're a Tolkein fan you must at least try this game.
World of Warcraft - I enjoy WoW in small doses, but of all the MMOs I've played for any length of time it's the one that feels most like a machine, in which you are a small cog. So well designed, but just lacks 'soul' for me.
Those would be the main ones I've played for any length of time. Champions, DCUO, Warhammer Online, DDO, Rift and probably others were all uninstalled quite quickly. TOR is currently downloading in the run up to the beta weekend, though I am not optimistic.
