I think it needs to be said that going fast and feeling like you're going fast can be different expereinces.
Example, Wipeout/FZero are both very fast games, in terms of actual speed.
But then you get something like Extreme-G 2 which, mechanically was kind of inferior to 1 I found, still had one very cool feature. When you reach a certain speed, you literally break the sound barrier. First the sonic boom, then all sound drops away and all you hear is the muffled hum of your engine.
Very cool.
