Just in general what is the best art form. Best at expressing views, ideas, concepts. Most engaging, best at reaching people, whatever criteria you see fit (Accepting video games are a true art form, there will be no discussion about that here).

This is 100% opinion, there is no right answer

I'm sorry if i missed your favorite kind of art, it is hard to cover the whole spectrum of art in a few poll slots

I do think this is an amazing topic, but this forum is just for a bit of fun & shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I find film most engaging.

There is plenty to appreciate, the acting, casting, story, composition, colour-contrast, costumes, set-design, special effects, blah de blah...

Photography, although I find it hard to choose between that, paintings, literature and to a lesser extent film.

Although it's not on there, so I'll go with paintings.

Surely that is just as subjective as what art is, or which individual piece of art is better.

This is 100% opinion, and just for a bit of fun, I know it is hard to sumerise the whole broad spectrum of art in one opinion poll, and I'm not trying to do that, I just want to bring up a good discussion on what are people's favorite art form.

Either music or the novel. And when i say novel i don't mean literature. I mean modern writers (or relatively modern) that write something relevant to this day and age.
I think you'll find that that is still literature. The word literature doesn't mean old or "classic", it's a general term for all books.

I'm going for music. The only one where one doesn't need their eyes for emotion to be evoked. And with music, I don't mean songs, lyricless songs or those that use vocals for music instead of lyrics.

After that would be video games. I feel it is the best genre to tell a story, possibly tying with books for this. Although video games need good music for the best moments. It's the reason I prefer video game music, along with not particularly liking music with lyrics.

Art cannot be quantified and neither should one attempt to in my opinion.

To avoid a low post count I am studying for a Masters Degree in Film Studies perhaps reflecting a personal preference amongst the arts.

EDIT: If you want to try and quantify abstract qualitites you may wish to pursue the (fundamentally flawed) Benthamite methodology of the 'felicific calculus'.

EDIT 2: Is the OP suggesting all "fictional" cinema has a narrative and all documentaries do not? I would take issue with both assertions.

That's what I had in mind... only I was going to add that 'sense' could be defined as physical sense (i.e. sights/sounds etc.) as one's view on 'art' is dependent on which of their senses they find stimulates their expressive thoughts most and to what level said sense is stimulated.

For example, while films or the like may be the easiest to express views through, abstraction is virtually impossible through that medium because the level of obligatory detail negates it. However, photography can capture it perfectly.

Me personally, though, it's a toss up between music and novels. My imagination runs riot when I read and I often have to remember how I envisage particular fictional worlds/characters when I re-read books as on second 'viewing' it inevitably changes (dependent on the mood with which I go into it). With music (and this is the reason I dislike opera) it's purely about the abstract imagery that come to me as I hear the notes (and which I keep having to remind myself, is not synaesthesia, as much as it seems to be).

As of now film is by far the easiest way to get across emotion and ideas. Though I believe video games will get there soon.

my opinion? there's no "best" for of art. each one can work differently and provoke different emotions, by engaging us in a certain way.
books could deliver an entirely different emotional experience then, say, a painting, or a movie.

as for my favorite...
well, lets just say I prefer having a controller or a mouse in my hand then sitting and watching a movie passively, though sometimes I'll rather read a book...
